You don't need to be clairvoyant to speculate, which is what the OP is asking.

I think Patty's contributions are 2 fold. 1st he brings the energy, in bundles. 2nd, he's fast and active on transition defense. That equates to steals and 2nd and 3rd options for the opponent's offense because they know Patty is lurking. The 1st reason cannot be overstated.

Whomever is the backup PG will be essential for the playoffs. Lot of time between then and now though.

He is averaging 1.5 assists in 16 MPG. At that rate he's dropping a whopping 3 assists in Tony Parker minutes.

The main thing we need against a team like Miami, is a second ballhandler who can make plays when Parker is neutralized by an athletic wing. So no, I'd say he would be a welcome addition with his hustle and 3 pt shooting, but nowhere near essential.

Patty better watch his back. A new challenger has emerged for backup pg, Matt "the Red Mamba" Bonner.

    essential?

absolutely not. No 3rd string PG is essential for a championship run, and if he is then we might just forfeit already.
