NEW YORK (AP) — A New York judge said Wednesday he’s close to releasing Donald Trump from a contempt finding, but only if the former president meets certain conditions, including paying $110,000 in fines accrued for failing to turn over do ents in a state civil investigation.
Judge Arthur Engoron said he will conditionally lift Trump’s contempt finding if, by May 20, Trump submits additional affidavits detailing efforts to search for records and explaining his and his company’s do ent retention policies, a company he hired to aid the search completes its work and he pays the fines.
Engoron ruled Trump in contempt on April 25 and fined him $10,000 per day for not complying with a subpoena for do ents in New York Attorney General Le ia James’ investigation, which is probing whether Trump may have misstated the value of assets like skyscrapers and golf courses on financial statements for over a decade.
The total Engoron ordered Trump to pay is the fine accrued through May 6, when Trump’s lawyers submitted 66 pages of court do ents detailing efforts to locate the subpoenaed records. Engoron could reinstate the fine if the conditions he set forth on Wednesday are not met.
A message seeking comment was left with Trump’s lawyer.

who was involved in an undercover operation to discover an Islamic plot to create methods of going through American airports without detection and carrying bombs," he said.
"So we know we're dealing with a guy who is not particularly careful about classified information and
if he can get some bragging rights by sharing it with adversaries he's willing to do it.
"Now when we find all of this apparent top secret information finding his way to unsecured boxes to Mar-a-Lago,
it's very encouraging that the Department of Justice isn't simply asking who packed the boxes,
but what did the president then of the United States on his way out of the Oval Office have in mind in taking that information?

Nebraska loss raises questions about Trump’s endorsement power
Charles Herbster’s loss in Tuesday’s Nebraska GOP gubernatorial primary is raising fresh questions about the strength of former President Trump’s endorsement.
Jim Pillen’s win marks the first race where a Trump-endorsed candidate lost a primary battle this cycle. Herbster’s case was unique in some ways — he was grappling with multiple sexual misconduct allegations before Trump arrived to rally with him the week before the primary.
But various other Trump-endorsed candidates in states like Georgia and Pennsylvania are potentially facing uphill climbs in the weeks ahead, even with the former president’s backing.
“They humiliated Donald Trump in Nebraska,” MSNBC host Joe Scarborough said on his show “Morning Joe” on Wednesday. “It sends a message to a lot of other Republicans that you can take this guy on, and you can beat him.”
Pillen, a University of Nebraska regent, won the nine-way primary with nearly 34 percent of the vote. Herbster trailed with 30 percent of the vote. Pillen is running to replace current Gov. Pete Ricketts (R), who is term-limited and has endorsed Pillen.
