I'm curious who his assistants will be, as if assume someone like Donovan, Kerr, or Stevens is the future longterm solution. Maybe room for Gentry? I know Gentry was an assistant under Pops briefly, and I know Pops credits Gentry for a change in philosophy regarded bench depth, rotation, minutes management, and rest, plus floor spacing via 2010 playoffs vs Suns.

Stevens seems like a natural, but Kerr seems a good fit, as well. Donovan has years of U19 USA experience on the International scene.

But this makes a ton of sense. It's a well-deserved honor, and with the eventual successor on staff, gives that person experience without just being thrown into things.

I just hope he gets to coach a good team that is capable of winning gold unlike '04.

stop making excuses for that duncan led show, tbh. That team never should have lost just because they didn't have the entire 1st team all nba starters. manu and ncioni beat them. peurto rico spanked them, smh

I bet Pop hires Brad Stevens as an assistant coach and then he takes over as HC for Pop in the 2024 Olympics once he retires.

That team was garbage and horribly configured. A starting line up of AI,Marbury,Richard Jefferson,Odom,Duncan was awful. You had 2 guys who were chuckers, along with 2 guys who couldn't shoot open jump shot. This enabled the world to play zone and throw triple teams at Duncan much like the Lakers had done. The '03 team who qualified for the Olympics demolished the same Argentina team that won gold. That goes to show you rosters do make a huge difference.

Well deserved and I am know he will do a great job with all the NBA talent available. It would be funny to see Pop put Duncan on a stacked team for just the award...

Hmmm wonder what the U.S. team will look like in 2020. Players like Curry, Westbrook, Durant, Howard, Harden, Paul, Lebron, and Griffin would all be 30 or older in five years and have already experienced gold. These guys will probably also win in 2016, thus decreasing their motivation even more to compete in 2020. So I doubt many of those players will return.

Pop will have to depend on players like Anthony Davis, Leonard, Irving, Wall, Cousins, Oladipo, Drummond, Monroe, Tobias Harris, MCW, Lillard, Green, Hayward, Beal, and one or two 30+ yr old veterans that might come back. Not exactly a stacked pipeline. Pop definitely will have his work cut out for him. Maybe some of these players can dramatically improve in the next five years.
