    North 'ready to fight'

North Korea is raising its level of rhetoric against the United States as international pressure increases on Pyongyang.

The North's unofficial spokesman in Tokyo, Kim Myong Chol, says North Korea may attack Japan and the US if tougher sanctions are imposed on his country.

Mr Kim claims North Korea may test a hydrogen bomb in a show of force.

He says his country would begin by attacking US military bases in the Asia-Pacific region and on the US mainland.

"We consider the UN resolution as an act of war," he said.

"We are ready to fight with America.

"We attack America, we attack US bases where ever in the areas...Japan, Guam, Hawaii and the US mainland."
That's exactly what Bin Laden was saying when the U.S. stationed troops in Saudi Arabia during Gulf War 1, and nobody took him seriously, it took 911 to change all that.

Hummm...conventional wisdom would say that if the first nuke test was a failure, considering it low-tonnage of TNT exlosive power, the U.S. may want to strike now before Kim has a chance to fix whatever went wrong, but if the test was a success, acting now would be a disaster.

Dan, it's a disaster waiting to happen anyway.

In fact, I think this one is insoluble unless the US rolls out the neutron bombs, which might not be a bad idea. But if you do, you will be forced to commit genocide on the North Koreans, and then the rest of the world will take the gloves off because it will be clear you have no boundaries and anything could come next... nah, this is one problem that seems like it's going to end in a great big hole in the ground no matter what happens.

If you have relatives or friends in Korea, Japan, China or Taiwan, urge them to get out of there if they haven't had the good sense to do so already.

    "neutron bombs"

nah, did you see what conventional arms did to south Beirut? Plus a few MOABs, no need for nukes. the problem is retaliation against SK and JP. although rummy would figure a few 100K killed in SK and JP would be "stuff happening"

    Neutron bombs? Are you serious?

Nuclear weapons are political and strategic weapons. They make for poor tactical and military weapons because there is nothing that we need them for that we can't do with regular weapons.

The fact is we're not going to launch a preemptive strike of any sort on NK, much less nuclear. They don't need nuclear weapons to make Seol look like Hiroshima and that is one of a detturent.

Then what else is there left to do? What if we seriously are attacked due to NK? There has to be a solution other than giving up more personal freedoms in the name of our saviour and diety, the W.

Maybe this is the world event which causes the common marriott to realize the U.N. is almost totally worthless and never really does anything?

I would rather us nuke them off the planet than sit around and wait to be nuked ourselves.

We will treat them the same way we treat any nation with any semblance of a real army: we'll pretend it's not that big of a deal and ignore them.

Surely even the common marriott is more educated about this kind of stuff now, as compared to pre 9/11? The outrage over another attack of 9/11 proportions if tied to NK would be unbelievable. We would have mass rioting at least. The U.S. will have to do something else besides talk with the U.N., or at least put up the facade that they are. What will it be?

You know, Iraq (and Afghanistan) could be valuable, and serve a purpose, if the Great Leader heeds your advice; and he probably is.

We know he wants, more than anything, to stay in power.

What is a sure way to lose power? Mess with the US, or one of our allies. WE WILL take you out, even at the cost of many American lives, the credibility of our country with other nations, and the popularity of our president - you will, as the ruler of a country that performed the act, either be killed, or frog marched into a kangaroo court for months on end, to rant, rave, and eventually, swing.

So, if nothing else, our actions in Iraq and Afghanistan might not all be for naught, afterall.

Perhaps Kim just sent a message to Bin Laden. While Kim doesn't have the missile range to strike the U.S. mainland, which he cites in his rant, Bin Laden has the foot soldiers that could deliver such a device to detonate in a major American city.

But don't talk to the Kim, that would be a sign of American weakness.

I would say that this is a completely different situation then Iraq, so no, I choose not to use the lessons learned regarding Iraq and try to apply them to Korea.........that's just dumb.

Thats what happened to Saddam. What difference did it make? You think Iran is afraid of us now? Not a chance. with Iran and create even more hate of the US.

"Bin Laden has the foot soldiers that could deliver such a device to detonate in a major American city."

come on, don't buy the Repug over-hyped scare tactics. Somebody obtaining and carrying a nuclear bomb into the USA is just so difficult, esp now that WTC has woke the up the somnolent US security apparatus.

OBL has the US military right where he drew them to, 1000s of logistical miles from the USA, pinned down in Iraq and Afganistan in-(staythe course)-definitely, right next to Iran and Syria and Pakistan, where it's so much easier to kill the infidels than in the USA.

Friedman in NYT sees October 06 as kind of a Tet offensive by the terrorists to convince the USA to pull out of Iraq. 10 US soliders killed just today, 63 and 2 weeks remaining in October.

    Now it's 69. Ducks in a row.

    Republican talking points;

Fight them there so we don't fight them here.
If your not with us your against us. (he says that to the world and US citizens)
    Dems want us to fail.

If we wanted us to fail, do you think we'd be ing? This would be party time! You couldn't have scripted a better failure than this! We would be applauding his genious of ignorance!

I don't buy into Repub scare tactics because they are all about shoring up votes and not securing the country. Repub failures have led to a greater opportunity for those that mean us harm to be successful.

Indeed we are more alert to the potential than we were pre-9/11 but there are things that can be exploited. The ports remain vulnerable and two of the named members of the so called axis of evil either have the bomb or are moving quickly toward it. Kim needs money and as sanctions tighten, he will take it where he can get it and OBL has some coin he can share.

Bush's North Korean failure has left us a step closer to the extremist who mean us harm having the potential to get their hands on the weapon of mass destruction.

Yeah...because you guys hate W and the Republicans more than terrorists or communist dictators...that much is obvious.

Either that or you are kicking the dog you know won't bite you, instead of the actual mean dog...

Neither speaks well for the Democrat mindset and willingness to sell out the country and US soliders, so people will, "like us" or to regain the white house.

Kiss his ass, that'll work, it's not like he doesn't have an entire country doing just that.

The guy has 20 million slaves that do nothing other than feed his ego...you think he's just misunderstood?

He's a ing dictator running a prison with millions of inmates.

He needs to be nuked off the planet...and so do the unfortunate civillians he has enslaved...sucks to be them, they should of thought about that back when they embraced communism(it always ends up that way)....nuke em, better them than us...for us, and the rest of the world.

"Pacifists never succeed, because aggressors always kill them"
    - A quote I heard last week that I can't find the source for now.

But this does not mean I endorse Whott's position
