Because it's a big giant rock that has no resources to exploit and no other research is warranted thus far. NASA halted all space shuttle launches period. Technology is more advanced and "cheaper" and by "cheaper" I mean " ing really expensive" as opposed to "Holy ! We're spending THIS much to tell the Rooskies to suck our American s?!! DO IT!".

the theory is that the government hired kubrick to oversee the filming of the landing (in a studio). then there was a mockumentary made about that conpsiracy theory.
