    Gameday: Spurs vs. Timberwolves
    By Joe Alexander

The Spurs haven't had much time to catch their breath heading into tonight's road meeting with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Tonight's game isn't the second game of a back-to-back for the Spurs, but it's close. It's their third game in three cities in four days.

The Spurs prevailed in double overtime against the Mavericks in Dallas on Tuesday and won a close game against the Hawks at the AT&T Center on Wednesday. On Monday and Thursday - the Spurs' last two days off - they were on planes.

The Spurs' first victory of the season came at the expense of the Timberwolves at the AT&T Center on Nov. 5. The Spurs dropped their first three games, then went two overtimes to beat the Timberwolves 129-125. Tony Parker had 55 points, Tim Duncan had 30 and Roger Mason had 26.

The Spurs and Timberwolves meet twice in 12 days. They play again on Dec. 23 at the AT&T Center.

The Spurs have won their last four games and a victory tonight would give them their longest win streak of the season.

The Timberwolves are a mess. They have lost their last seven games - the last two under new head coach Kevin McHale.

Here is the latest on the Timberwolves:

    Brian Stensaas, Minneapolis Star Tribune
Kevin McHale is a planner. In 13 Hall of Fame seasons with Boston, McHale chalked up his success to always being ready for what the opposition had in mind for stopping him. He applies that same level of preparedness to his new duties as Timberwolves coach.

Don Seeholzer, St. Paul Pioneer Press
After a four-game absence that felt much longer, Mike Miller will finally return to the Timberwolves' starting lineup tonight against San Antonio.

It's quite a trap game. Wolves aren't that bad and should be motivated wiht their new coach. Spurs will need to match their level of intensity to win this one.

    LITTLE FAME AS COACHES

Hall of Fame players have made little impact lately as NBA coaches. When Minnesota tabbed Kevin McHale this week, he became the NBA's only active coach to have been a Hall of Fame player.

The only active one last season was the since fired Isiah Thomas. There's little need to remind anyone Thomas' Knicks didn't exactly dominate.

No Hall of Fame player has won a le as a coach since Boston's K.C. Jones in 1986. Since then, the only Hall of Fame players to have lasted even a full season on the bench have been Larry Bird, Dave Cowens, Dan Issel, Jones, Willis Reed, Thomas, Wes Unseld and Lenny Wilkens.

Come back in April 2010 to see if McHale can at least make it through a full campaign.

Yeah this game is very loseable. Minnesota has played well against the Spurs at home lately. Add to that the added enthusiasm for McHale and the fact that the Spurs are probably going to still be a bit tired from that last back-to-back and I don't have the best of feelings about this one. Hopefully I'm dead wrong.

I hope to see limited minutes for the big 3, like others already said they'll still be tired. Be nice if Mason/Hill can carry us for a good chunk of the game.

Little piece on Love playing Duncan. Love wrote a nice piece after the last game, he respects Duncan a lot, said it was really cool playing against a guy he grew up admiring.
