The NBA will implement a coach's challenge at the upcoming summer leagues and anticipates using the rule during the 2019-20 regular season as part of a pilot program, per a memo sent to teams this morning and obtained by ESPN.
Coaches will get only one challenge per game, whether it is successful or unsuccessful, according to the memo. They can use it to challenge only called fouls, goaltending, basket interference and plays when the ball is knocked out of bounds, the memo says. The NBA has tested this version of the challenge system in the G League over the past two seasons.
Coaches must have a timeout remaining to use a challenge. The team must call a timeout immediately after the event it would like to challenge, and the coach must "twirl his/her index finger toward the referees" to signal for the challenge, the memo states. If the challenge is successful, the team retains the timeout it used to stop play. If the challenge is unsuccessful, it loses that timeout.

So, will Pop hold the record for the quickest challenge?

Sign me up. I hate watching a good game get ruined by bad officiating. Then you get the "apology" from the league the next day with no real changes.

Because it uses a timeout. I doubt it will be used in the 4th.

Alot of coaches will use this to make a point and change how a game is officiated.

Harden draws a foul and it ends up being not a foul...The would have some effect on referes I am assuming

Totally agree here. Will either be used by coaches to make a point of when bull fouls are called, or when a bad foul is called on a key guy putting him in foul trouble. Will take a lot to overturn but good to implement.

    I like this change

This is slippery. You challenge a foul, but the replay shows your guy pushed off (offensive foul) before he was fouled. Can create a mess.

I don’t think you can challenge a missed foul call. Only “called” fouls.

Teams will need a of a lot more than one challenge then.

I've been in favor of this for a long time. It works perfectly in tennis.

NBA needs to do something about this 2 minute review rule. Anytime a player/coach asks for a review it is done and the process takes 2-4 minutes. It's totally being abused and used as free timeouts to draw up plays and get players rest, plus it's extending the game another 10 minutes.

True. Spurs probably won 2-3 games more last season.

The Spurs would have won that Memphis game last November, the game where LMA got zaza-ed by Marc Gasol on the last play, out beyond the 3pt line. The Spurs lost by one, but LMA would have made at least 2 of the 3 free throws, if he had gotten them. Seems like a sure bet, anyway.

Yeah of course you can’t challenge a non call. Im just saying your going to challenge a foul and bring all kinds of attention to the fact that your dude got away with a blatant foul that the refs missed before your challenged call. Its just going to get messy from a finger pointing perspective.

Oh yeah, called fouls. It would not have changed that Memphis game, where the foul was not called. Dammit.

I think they should pick one lucky fan for each game (one from each team), and let them challenge a call. If the call gets reversed, they win a prize.

Or maybe they should count up all the calls that get reversed through the challenge, and the ref with the best percentage wins the Most Valuable Official at the end of season award extravaganza.

Or how about if we give the coaches one challenge per game, but the reversal is automatic? Yeah, that would make the game a lot more exciting.
