There is no way that Trump and his handlers didn't know that various armed militia groups were going to be at the rally. They had been courting them since Bannon was running his campaign and secret service do their job. You can handwave at one statement made well after the breach and ignore what he told those militiamen at the rally but its just willful ignorance.

Because they spent so much time trying to put together a bipartisan whole congressional review like they did for 9/11.
GOP cannot take part because the reality off the situation is damning with what Trump and his circles knew about and said to armed militia groups. It's one thing to spin it in their echo chamber. Quite another for them to be there and be seen taking part in a courtroom style discourse.
Dems likely knew that and dragged it out even more for political points.
