I've had the displeasure of going to Fry's a couple times in the past few years and those were some of the most depressing experiences of my life.

Not a good time to own brick and mortar specialty stores. It's been well over a decade since I've set foot in a Fry's, but I imagine the writing was on the wall even pre-COVID.

Chain was great in the 2000s. I was able to build a PC using parts from there almost as cheaply as using newegg back around 2005 when I just wanted something that day. There was no equivalent to it at least on the west coast and in Texas where you could buy all your PC components and have a really good selection too. I guess Microcenter is the only store like it still remaining nowadays.

Not sure what Altex has for PC parts but it's a good store for electronic repair supplies with some cool, hard to find novelty items sometimes. A bit expensive though.

Altex is ridiculously expensive for PC hardware. Like $300 gpus are usually $500 there. Wish we had a Microcenter in town. If I need a cable though Altex is ok. I guess for computer cases too, they have a decent selection and price is ok.

Never heard of Fry's, but I'm guessing RadioShack is next? Circuit City died around 11 years ago iirc. Amazon and Walmart destroyed em all.

I worked at Fry's when I was young. Components department so laid back.

Your post is spot on. They had a pornographic DVD and magazine area.

There was simply a gross abundance of everything. And this was before online buying really took off so the warehouse area was enormous. Twice or larger than the Costco I worked at.

There was also an arrogance. Compared to Best Buy the customer service was abysmal. I came from Costco where they taught us to never point to where an item is located but instead walk the customer to the location. On the other hand people at Fry's were doing A-Lot more window shopping. So that no pressure and only answer questions don't approach the customer, approach might have worked in many cases. But I think some people are too shy to ask questions pertaining to electronics because it might come off as stupid.

I remember one Christmas there like 1,000 electronic toy airplanes and cars on the sales floor. I don't think much of that sold and many were returned anyway.

I had fond memories of working there atleast in my department. Be on time, answer customer questions and stock/put back returns. Not much else demanded. I liked wearing a tie with my white dress shirt and slacks.

I think the consumer also became wiser and more comfortable buying from their couch. The 45+ demographic. When I returned years later (recently) the software department no longer had dedicated employees but displays with product remained. It was booming while I still worked.

Yeah, and Walmart doesn't always have what I'm looking for / need at the right time. Sure they're cheap on Amazon, but what if I need it tonight or tomorrow, not next week? Tbh.

It won't work without 350 dollar Monster cables though. Just saying.

What's funny is now with 4k60 and HDMI 2.1 people are going to still think all HDMI cables are the same since they didn't matter for 5 foot runs with 1080p60 signals.

Damn I just always went to the one in Torrance with the building that looked straight out of 1977. No special theme or anything.

You could walk inside the spaceship. It was wild. I think it was War of the Worlds or something along those lines, maybe the funny Mars one, not sure.

their movie selection was top notch for a chain. One of the few places you could find Criterion Collection releases back in the early 00’s.

Yep, Mono, that's right, they had that whole Criterion rack at the end of that aisle at the Thunderbird location. Cost an arm and leg for them, but I looked nonetheless and it was right next to the closed aisle with the dirty movies with the employee guarding that aisle's access. I was old by then so he didn't even check me.

How was their porn selection? You get lots of black man videos for you and Katie-girl when you went to the couch?
