Socrates is being tried in court for apparent crimes that he has committed. These crimes are being presented to Socrates by the jury of the court. Socrates is a man who believes that he has wisdom and possibly the wisest person according to the Oracle.
Now, although he is being accused of corrupting the youth and not believing in the gods, the jury and Meletus do not back up their accusations properly. The jury is already biased against Socrates because they have not had a trial for this reason yet.
The jury and higher officials do not know how to deal with the situation, so they take the easy way out. No matter what Socrates says to back his counter accusations, they do not care. Socrates says, “He says that I am guilty of corrupting the young, but I say that Meletus is guilty of dealing frivolously with serious matters, of irresponsibly bringing people into court, and of professing to be seriously concerned with things about none of which he has ever cared…” (28).
Socrates knows that this trial will be unjust, and calls Meletus out saying that he does not even care about him. Socrates will continue to find ways to make the people accusing him look like hypocrites.
