    Grassley Requests Info From Political Firm Behind Trump-Russia Dossier

    Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on Monday requested information from the political opposition research firm behind an explosive do ent containing allegations of ties between President Donald Trump and Russia.

    Grassley sent a letter dated Friday to Fusion GPS requesting that the firm answer questions about who hired the company "to conduct opposition research relating to Mr. Trump and his associates," when its investigation took place and what relationship the firm had with the FBI, which reportedly paid the firm's investigator.

    The do ent, which BuzzFeed published in January, remains largely unsubstantiated, though in February CNN reported that multiple unnamed sources within the U.S. intelligence community had corroborated certain communications detailed in it.

    "When political opposition research becomes the basis for law enforcement or intelligence efforts, it raises substantial questions about the independence of law enforcement and intelligence from politics," Grassley wrote. "The Committee requires additional information to evaluate this situation."

    He requested that the company reply in two weeks, by April 7.
