all of u were bashing him lead by the charge of non college basketball watcher timvp.........let this be a lesson to never parot what someone else says & watch the games for yourself.......... also its time to give playblair props for correctly telling you both tre jones/josh primo were terrific picks
playblair is the best talent scout on spurstalk because he does not judge by youtube highlights/breakdowns & mock draft write ups he actually watches full games...........

According to my sauces.. Heb wanted Primo picked early in this year's draft or else they'd pull sponsorship from the organization.

I actually liked the pick, just questioned why at 12 and not traded back on draft night. But some light was shed on that an the pick made some sense afterwards.

He's referring to the multiple posts about teams wanting to pick him in first so he would've been gone

It’s too early to apologize until the dust settles. The make-up of the roster. What pieces will still be added? I’m sure Primo is a big part, may not be immediate. But there’s a big plan for him drafted at 12. Likewise picking Vassell, a potential 3 and D specialist at 11. One thing the Spurs have on those championship years, besides Timmy of course, was a defensive catalyst, a Ninja, Bruce, Kawhi. Players are being positioned, not as obvious to the unsophisticated. And I’m obviously one, with the occasional outburst. I still believe that we have the best managed organization, ahead of everyone, playing chess while others play checkers. They know what they’re doing picking Primo.

One thing I think we need to realize is that Josh Primo wasn't a pick for the next three years. He's not even a pick for the next five years. In three years, he may be doing the same thing Duarte is doing for the Pacers, who selected immediately after the Spurs. In five years, Primo will be 23 years old and Duarte (for example) will be 29 years old and in his prime.

Josh Primo was a pick for the next ten years. Whether he pans out, lasts that long, etc., is up to time to determine, but in ten years this kid will be only 28 years old.

As someone pointed out in another thread, the Spurs could lose this kid by the time he’s ready to be truly impactful at the NBA level. And if our strategy is being so weak that we garner a top pick next draft, then I think it’s mission accomplished.

But he looked good in this last game.

so if the Spurs drafted a player who was a star from day 1, the Spurs would lose them anyway. What the is even this logic?

I'll admit he looks better than I was expecting, but let's not forget that Bryn Forbes looked like Steph Jordan in summer league and we all saw how that turned out.

Obviously he is a very young talent and has lots of room to grow, but in the eternal words of The Wolf...let's not start sucking each other's s quite yet.

Still doesn't fix the fact that we have a logjam at the guard position that just seems to be getting worse unless Pop plans to play microball all season.

Yeah, people think we don’t need Rookies sent Austin any more, but he needs two things immediately, work on his body/frame, and work on his handles. That’s best accomplished in Austin. If he were an elite defender, he could get PT in SA like Kawhi did, by standing in the corner on offense, and hounding their best player on the other end, but I don’t see that yet, only glimpses, like his offense.

Dex, did you really just compare a 23 - year old, undrafted player - playing for his livelihood - to a 18 - year old, lottery pick oozing with potential?

Potential on both ends which Forbes has never shown.

And clearly, they won't play too much "micro ball" with 4 centers and 4 PF's (not including Keldon) on the roster.

Hey, all I'm saying is Bryn Forbes put up better numbers in Summer League.

I know Primo is learning on the job...but let's not get too crazy about early results. Walker and White also looked great in Summer League, and Tim Duncan sucked in Summer League, so maybe Summer League isn't the best projection to go by here.

And if we aren't playing microball, then who all is getting minutes this season between Murray, White, Walker, Jones, Forbes, and Primo?

Again, the numbers just don't work out. You have 96 minutes a game to split between the two guard spots, and 6 guys to choose from. I think it's pretty obvious Primo will be spending a LOT of time in Austin just because we have too many guards on the roster right now. We spent the 12th pick on a guy we won't even see play until next year at best, and this is WITHOUT the expectation of contending.

We have no problem going crazy about early results from players the Spurs didn’t draft. Just saying.

That’s not how rookie contracts/extensions work. See eg, luka’s extension, AD’s first extension, Zion’s coming extension. Rookies drafted in the first round are basically stuck on the team that drafted them unless they’re willing to risk a huge amount of money.

From the team’s perspective, it is definitely better when young players reach a high level of play early in their career.

Yes, I agree with your first paragraph hence why I questioned Ed’s logic.

elaborate more on your second paragraph.

I apologize for Brian Wrong drafting this bum. I will wait the two years (and then the next 2 years when slurpers say give him another 2 years) so catch me in 2025 when I’m proven right

Are these games broadcast? Interested in seeing what Vassell looks like and if Samanic is destined to be a bust.
