First, most of the art he's critiquing isn't even Modern Art, since that actually refers to a period that ended a long time ago. (Yes, it's very douchy that people refer to a past era as 'modern', but what can you do?) Modern Art was people like Picasso and Dali and van Goh. There were some great pieces and styles in that era. It's funny that this guy didn't bother to bring those artists up, since viewers would know he was full of crap pretty quickly if he had.
Second, it's dumb to talk about one medium or even just a few media of art and act like that describes the whole picture. We're in an era in which we are pushing visual boundaries every day in movies and video games. We're touching on a level of realism that the classical artists couldn't even dream of. It's to the point that being realistic-looking isn't even a big deal anymore. , I'm pretty sure a 3-D printer could make the David in a few days.
So people want something different from their art than they get in their usual lives. Enter all these flash colors or blobs, and you get why folks would be drawn to them. It's something that you have to think about, as opposed to the Pieta, which is pretty self-explanatory. I hardly thin that it's a step back for us to have our current art rather than the pictures of the past that anyone with a decent computer program can replicate.
Does that mean I'd drop 50k on a rock? Nope. But I wouldn't drop 50k on a rock that was shaped like a man, either, so what's the difference?
This dude lists his unfortunate Michael Jackson paintings as "fine art" on his website, so I don't think I want him to be a tastemaker for the rest of us.
