I think it's safe to say the NBA became unwatchable after TD retired

    The wheels fell off
The fact that a capable player like TD was sitting on the bench at end of games vs. the Warriors was a sad commentary on the league tbh.

The NBA was looking to go fast paced fun and gun D'antoni style for a long time. TD and the Spurs were "boring". The writing was on the wall.

There was no defense before either lol
That’s what you took away from it?
There was defense when I was a kid growing up btw. Sorry you didn’t get to see the Bulls in the 90s smothering teams or the 99-03 Spurs or heck even the 04-05 Pistons.

Q s opinions mean all, i'll tell you why the ratings are down:

    1. the product this year is garbage. teams are constantly missing key guys, big time players like lebron/AD missing huge chunks of the season, Brooklyn guys have only played 168 mins together, and every night teams are playing half a squad of no names against their opponent

    2. no fans in the arenas most of the year. a lot of people cant watch without the crowd as it takes away from the enjoyment/immersion of the game

    3. television ratings. only boomers look at TV ratings being indicative of anything. more people shift away from cable, there arent a lot of other good ways to consistently watch ball, and with a lot of people having financial setbacks in the last year, cable is probably one of the first things to get cut. not only that, but again, most people dont watch TV anymore. when you can stream games illegally or just follow them online, why pay for cable?

    4. threepoint spamfests constantly lead to blowouts and boring games on national television. people are tired of players load managing and not playing in marquee games so they're tuning out.

    5. the "woke" probably plays a role but its being vastly overstated. ratings are down across all sports. iirc stanley cup had pitiful ratings this year and they're the most non-woke league full of white dudes in sports, so whats the problem here?

    6. no interesting storylines this year (that would interest casuals)

gots like derp and qhrisbot love stroking each other to Oscar ratings or whatever stupid ass talking point chuck callesto or tucker carlson gives them, but they're certified board re s and everyone knows this. the reality is there are a mul ude of factors but the biggest ones are the product on the court is just not as entertaining as it was because of constant threepoint spamfest blowouts and the covid protcols forcing guys to sit out make for a bad product
yep i'd also add the bit about nba marketing focus on drawing in the casuals (ie social media strategy, highlights, also i think broader rule changes like the 3pters, high scores, less defense, prop up snowflake shooters, etc.) while neglecting/annoying actual fans ... and not drawing in the casuals because WHY WOULD YOU FOCUS ON MARKETING BASKETBALL TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T REALLY LIKE BASKETBALL

Also other sports/leagues have done a good job gaining a lot of new, younger fans through good PR/com/use of social media

Formula 1 is a good example of that

Yeah it was so soft back in the days that Kareem and Magic looked at the refs instead of tracking back everytime someoe stripped the ball from them

Or Jordan who cried to Stern because the Pistons were to tough for him
Or Jordan who complained to the refs every night during his career

    Tough guys

But that's the point. Stern had to soften it up for his pets; but the game on the whole was tougher. Bird and Dr. J never ed.

But I have to be honest and let you know as a former Los Angelino (moved 2016) after talking to many Laker fans during the 2020 bubble and asking them if they are watching the Lakers dominance about 80-90% said they stopped watching due to iden y politics.
There is no way 80 to 90% of people even know what the phrase iden y politics even means lmfao

So that means the NBA died in the 80s-90s
