Looks like Armon Johnson will be our backup PG and Patty Mills made the roster. This actually work out well for us I think.

Not a bad trade for the Blazers. Bayless is very good offensive player, but there just wouldn't be enough minutes and touches for him to reach his full potential. It makes sense...

Does not bode well for Jerrells chances now.

Bayless was never used in Portland. He was very inconsistent when he was. I think the Blazers are going to continue to make moves like this as they stockpiled guys and now they have to get rid of the ones that don't play.

A first rounder is not a bad haul for him. Plus, I like Patty Mills better anyways.

It might work well for NOLA especially if Chris Paul happens to get hurt during the season. I think Portland still won this deal though. Future first round pick for a player who wouldn't be seeing much minutes for Portland with the amount of depth they had.

Bayless is very talented, but he doesn't have a reliable jumper. It will be interesting to see how he is used in New Orleans.

The Portland Trail Blazers have found a trade to create some extra roster room, agreeing Saturday to deal guard Jerryd Bayless to the New Orleans Hornets for a conditional future first-round pick, according to sources close to the situation.

Sources with knowledge of the deal told ESPN.com that Bayless -- who has struggled for playing time in Portland despite flashes of scoring talent in his first two NBA seasons -- is headed to Chris Paul's squad in the second trade swung for backcourt depth by new Hornets general manager Dell Demps.

New Orleans also acquired Willie Green from the Philadelphia 76ers in September to join Paul and second-year guard Marcus Thornton but are high on Bayless, sources said, because new Hornets coach Monty Williams worked closely with him in Portland.

The Blazers were facing a roster crunch even before ESPN.com reported Friday that they had reached an agreement to sign veteran big man Fabricio Oberto to a one-year deal.

Even after completing this deal -- which sources said has been submitted for league approval Saturday night -- Portland will still have 16 players on its roster and must release one more player Monday before opening-night rosters are finalized leaguewide.

The Blazers targeted Oberto to help them cope with the ongoing recoveries of centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla from the serious knee injuries they suffered last season.

Marcus Camby is Portland's only healthy true center, forcing Portland to use LaMarcus Aldridge and Dante Cunningham at the position in spots during the exhibition season thanks to a season-ending knee injury suffered by reserve big man Jeff Pendergraph.

Bayless, meanwhile, is expected to add a needed spark to the Hornets' bench and give them more support for Paul, who is also recovering from an injury-riddled season in which he missed 37 games.

The Portland Oregonian reported Friday that Pendergraph will be waived Monday if he hasn't been traded by then, suggesting that Australian guard Patrick Mills -- now that Bayless is being traded -- will survive final cuts.

Since this frees up a roster spot, does this mean that the Blazers arent gonna waive Pendergraph anymore?

Good deal, Bayless was always bound to be underutilized with the Blazers. First rounder sounds good to me.

Roy is a little shark living in a bowl with several goldfishes. Roy allows no one to take more fodder and/or grow bigger than he does. the young guys are no less talented than Roy i think. Roy was just lucky enough to join the team at a good time when the whole team was full of dip s, and was immediately promoted to be the franchise player.

Blazers add another asset to trade chest

The Blazers traded a guard on Saturday, and it’s not the one you might think.

Rudy Fernandez stayed put, but Portland sent Jerryd Bayless to New Orleans for a conditional first-round pick, helping to clear a roster spot for newly signed Fabricio Oberto. (Portland had to create two spots, technically, but the other apparently will come by waiving forward Jeff Pendergraph, who is out for the season.)

In a roundabout way, Fernandez is part of the reason. His strong preseason, as well as that of fellow guards Wesley Matthews and Armon Johnson, helped ease Portland minds that they could part with Bayless. Matthews in particularly is likely to see heavy duty as the team’s backup point guard, even if Brandon Roy does the bulk of the ball-handling in that alignment. Rookie Johnson, a second-rounder who has lapped first-rounder and fellow guard Luck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_Lu ck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_ Williams, may also see greater opportunity.

And what Portland got in return is pretty good. According to the Oregonian, the protection is only top-7 for 2011 and top-8 each of the three years after; since the Hornets aren’t exactly a guaranteed success this year, it appears the Blazers gained a strong asset to utilize in future deals. If Bayless was going to be a fringe rotation player anyway, clearing the roster spot and getting a plum asset makes the deal a no-brainer.

Keep an eye on that asset. Portland, a team that’s widely considered “one player away,” now has another alluring piece to package in a trade should Mr. Right become available. The Blazers have two rookie first-rounders who will hardly play this year, New Orleans' first-rounder, their own, the expiring contracts of Joel Przybilla and Andre Miller and talented young players like Fernandez and Nic Batum. Few teams are better positioned to pounce.

From the New Orleans end, Hornets coach Monty Williams was a Blazers assistant last year and clearly holds Bayless in high esteem, and the Hornets get a decent young player with a low salary. The Hornets project as a prime contender for the West’s final playoff spots, so while they mildly overpaid, it also could end up providing the all-important difference between finishing 8th in the West and landing 9th.

Adding Bayless is important for two reasons. First, his acquisition ends New Orleans' slapstick pursuit of a backup point guard that saw a head-scratching trade with the 76ers for Willie Green and another with the Spurs for D-League vet Curtis Jerrells. It goes without saying that Bayless is a massive upgrade on both. Second, while Bayless isn’t a pure point guard, his shot-creating ability in particular should help one of the league’s weakest second units generate offense.

Ultimately, however, this deal is about the Blazers’ confidence in Matthews and Fernandez allowing them to part with Bayless and get more trade assets for down the road.

Protection on NOLA pick for Bayless: NOLA keeps '11 pick if No. 1-7; keep it '12, '13 and '14 if top 8. After that, Port gets 2 2nd rounders

This helps our backup PG situation where everyone from Green to Jerrells were garbage in my opinion.

I'm not a fan of Bayless. He is athletic and strong, but doesn't shoot well and is raw as a PG.

Still, he is a big upgrade and has decent shooters around him with Peja, Thornton, and Jason Smith on the second unit. The bench has potential, but the team needed a decent backup PG and I think Bayless can do it.

Demps might have overpaid for Bayless, but he can really have an impact over the season by giving CP3 much needed rest, providing a spark off the bench, and setting up the shooters in the 2nd unit with Smith, Peja, and Thornton.
