Debt has nothing to do with wealth of a nation. Debt is owed by the government, mostly to it's own citizens (contrary to popular belief most government debt is to US citizens -- not foreign en ies). The government can be up to it's ass in debt -- but that doesn't change the wealth held by it's citizens.
And national debt will never be reckoned with -- unlike people governments are functionally immortal. As long as you are borrowing money at less than the inflation rate like we have (or near to it ) debt actually becomes a revenue stream. It's a odd thing to get in a room full of economists talking about this.
So while it's fun to beat up on the pubbies about it (because their guy campaigned on reducing the debt) it's not really much of a concern. yet. right now. We have other issues that are immediate.
