A gold medal and MVP honours at EuroBasket 2007 and another strong showing for club side the Utah Jazz all add up the FIBA Europe Player of the Year Award for Andrei Kirilenko of Russia.

The 2.09m forward takes home the prize after winning a vote of both fans and a panel of basketball experts, media and coaches from 25 different countries.

Kirilenko led the surprise Russian side at EuroBasket 2007; averaging 18 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.2 steals to go with nearly two blocks per game. He had 29 points and eight rebounds in a crucial semi-final win over Lithuania and 17 points in the final against Spain...

Last year's winner, Dirk Nowitzki finished second while Jose Calderon of EuroBasket silver medallists Spain came in third.

Second place finisher Nowitzki was the MVP of the NBA last season, averaging 24.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. He was also the leading scorer at EuroBasket 2007, averaging 24.0 points per game in leading Germany to a fifth place finish and a possible spot in the Olympics via the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Jose Calderon finished third after an impressive showing for Spain that helped them all the way to the finals. The 1.90m point guard was second on the team in scoring behind Pau Gasol and shot an impressive 50% from behind the three-point line. He has been phenomenal for the Toronto Raptors of the NBA as well this year, averaging 12.4 points per game and recording an impressive 5.62 assists-to-turnover ratio.

Tony Parker of France and Ramunas Siskauskas of Lithuania rounded out the top five with Parker just edging out the CSKA Moscow star for fourth place....

This is just ridiculous to name a FIBA Europe player of the year.
It's like naming a "NBA final player of the year".

Parker won the European player of the year award in last December.

It is a Player of the Year Award given out by FIBA Europe-- it is not just about the play during the Eurobasket tournament.

FIBA Europe gives it out and determines its winner just like the Award that Tony won is determined by the criteria set by the Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

Don't whine just because Tony did not win this one.

Do you realize that this award is mainly based on what a player does during a 15 days compe ion ?
This is just ridiculous to give an "player of the year" award by focusing on a 2 weeks compe ion.

It's not surprising to see FIBA preaching for his own compe ions and not looking at the main compe ions managed by ULEB and NBA.

No this award based on club team and national team. You not have right informations on this. How can Papaloukas win award in 2006 when national team not beat Spain and how can Dirk win award in 2007 when Germany not beat Greece and also Dallas not beat the Heats?

Award not just go to best player on team win Eurobasket beside Eurobasket once every 2 year. You just mad because Parker not win yet. But look at some thing with how award finish. If go by club team like you think should Siskauskus, Diamantidis deserves just as much as Parker do.

No this award based on club team and national team.
    I've said "mainly based".
99% of this award is based on what the player has done during 15 days.
There is just no way that Kirilenko could get the award over Dirk or Parker if it wasn't the case.

As an Euro, you should know the war between ULEB and FIBA. You shouldn't be surprise that a FIBA award doesn't consider what a player like Diamantidis does in a ULEB compe ion (the Euroleague).

This award sucks and is just a FIBA propaganda BS.

Bruno is right on this one.

FIBA is not in charge of european club compe ions (national and euro). They don't look at the results players have in those champs, not to mention the NBA. They sure have to watch it but that's not supposed to be the main criterias anyway.

    So, yes, that's pretty ridiculous.

    NBA level >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Euroleague level.

What Dirk and Parker have done this year is very impressive. They were by far the 2 best Europeans players of the year.

Both are very close but I would have given the award to Dirk. Parker has a NBA le and the NBA final MVP award but Dirk was the NBA MVP and has, unlike Parker, qualified his national team for the Olympic qualifying tournament.

isnt dirk the first international mvp? i know nash is canadian but its not quite the same since he played US college ball (a la hakeem). then again, did dirk play professionally in germany or some fiba league prior to be being drafted? i imagine so but havent ever heard that part of his story. difficult to believe he was an out of high school foreigner!

but yeah, bruno is right- the article says "A gold medal and MVP honours at EuroBasket 2007 and another strong showing for club side the Utah Jazz all add up"...

so basically, they think the best player on russia > the best nba season. and dirk's was without doubt the best (he was also leading scorer at eurobasket but plays on a crap team- i guess the warriors collapse ruined dirks image in europe too!) if anything last season was really bad for AK and it seems they consider it good just because the jazz got to the WCF (despite AK having a bad season!)

its fine for them to have this award, but it seems the criteria is bad. AK is not very high up on my list of incredible european players, even if he did win eurobasket.
