You probably need to run an optical cable from the 360 to your home theater...
So I got an HDTV the other day. I hooked up my Xbox 360 to the TV using an HDMI cable I bought with the TV. From the TV... I have my home theater connected to my HDTV via an optical audio cable, but it sounds like crap when I'm on my Xbox. What's wrong? Any help would be appreciated <3

I think some TVs will only pass 2.0 sound not the 5.1 from HDMI>TV>Stereo...you need to just run the optical wire from the Xbox to the tv. I know my TV did that when I tried that setup.
I think the only way to get it correct is XBOX HDMI> Stereo HDMI (if it has one) then Stereo HDMI>TV.
I know what you are going to post next.
How do I fit both in? The HDMI blocks me from using the optical.

I just got a new TV and it passes the 5.1 to my receiver threw optical.
I have my PS3, Xbox 360 and Cable box all hook threw HDMI and then I got the optical out on the tv to my receiver and it passes the 5.1 NICE!!
The 2 other LCD do not do this they only pass 2.0 sound. they were a Olevia and a Westinghouse LCDs. My new one is a Sony Bravia. What is your tv brand?
I know on the PS3 you have to tell it what kid of TV it is...480-720-1080 etc...so that may have something to do with it.
As well as what kind of cable you're using
So maybe thats the same on the 360
