Missed the debate. Watching the replay now. Palin is a good speaker but clearly looks like a student that didn't study all year and is now cramming for her finals. She shouldn't have accepted the nomination, she wasn't ready and it could very possibly hurt her political future. It's really a no win situation for her.

He also had a tendency to follow Palin down the rabbit trail. When her answer wasn't in response to the question asked, Biden would respond to her answer and then try to respond to the question that was initially asked. It made his answer sound disjointed. It's like he was trying to dance to the beat of a mad drummer.
Very well said. She was all over the place but he followed right behind her.

WHOTTT happened to Whottt? Where'd he go?

    Right here

I already knew what this thread was going to be ...didn't disappoint. Everyone reacted exactly as I suspected they would except for baselinebum who continues to impress inspite of his political inclinations...and timvp who had a pretty nice breakdown.

Keep publishing CNN and MSNBC Polls...then realize no one is watching them...in fact Fox is now outdrawing some of the broadcast news networks. They mean nothing.

Naturally...I thought Palin totally smoked Joe Biden.

It's plain ignorance to think she's less qualified that guys like Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan were she's just not as good at bull ting.

Like I said..it seems many active political minds hate the idea of a non-politician hitting Washington as much as Washington does.

You people deserve the government we have.

Palin wins. She speaks to the people...

I know she doesn't speak to the SpursTalk politcial forum...then again, you guys were in teh tank for Hedo, Beno nd Devin as well.

Women hate women. I have never understood why. They always talk about each other behind their backs. Even their best friends.

I can't believe they're saying she's fake when Biden is sitting their with hair plugs, a botoxed forehead and those cheesy ass capped teeth...talking out both sides of his mouth on every answer.

He bull ted his way around he answers too..he just does it better and that's what people want from their politcians...great liars.

Was funny when he owned himself on the first amendment he's only a lawyer that's been in Washington for 30 years....I know, I know, it's just Joe being Joe...but hey, Palin doesn't have an expert opinion on every case tried before the Supreme Court since 1903 so she's the idiot.

She's not an idiot she's just unprepared and not ready. Only being able to answer in talking points comes off as being unintelligent. No way she can cram a lifetime of politics and issues into a month or so. She should have said thanx but no thanx to the VP nomination. It could potentially ruin her future political career.

The real problem was the interviews before the debate, we all knew she didn't know and that anything she'd say in the debate would be rehearsed, if she hadn't done those interviews maybe more people would buy that she knows something...

I thought it was an interesting debate. It lived up to my expectations.

The smartest thing Biden did was attack McCain instead of Palin. The most dangerous thing he could have done for Obama's sake was get into a verbal confrontation with Palin and allow her and McCain by association to win sympathy points. In the last 30 or so years, Democrats have trailed far behind Republicans in as far as seeing the big picture and understand what the repercussions would be for different tactics. But finally it seems like they figured it out this time around.

Biden used his experience to come across as much more prepared if he were to ascend to the presidency. I don't think anyone can deny that fact. However, I think he made a few mistakes along the way where he lost focus and started making this about himself instead of the Obama/Biden ticket. He obviously has a big ego and it is difficult for him to always keep things about the ticket instead of about himself. I also thought he got lulled into Palin's subject changing game and he'd be led off track by her ramblings and then he'd start rambling himself. The difference is when the two ramble is she still keeps you somewhat engaged, while he puts you to sleep.

I was expecting Palin to fall flat on her face at least a couple times but I thought she actually stayed upright most of the time. Her avoidance of questions was laughable at times and I'm sure some of her answers are going to be torn to pieces once the "fact checkers" get a hold of the transcript. That said, I thought she was better than Biden in terms of realizing she is running with McCain and not just herself. In the middle of the debate, she had a good stretch where she had Biden struggling for words. Biden won the beginning and end of the debate but I thought Palin won a section there in the middle ... which is something I didn't think should could do.

Using no expectations, Biden had to be the technical winner of the debate. But accounting for expectations, I thought Palin held her own. Most will criticize her for changing the topics and twisting the issues to talk about what she wanted to talk about, but that is a debate strategy that has been used as long as there have been debates. While it's probably true she'd do it because she didn't know the answers to the questions, her resume makes it obvious that she isn't going to know enough to out politic Biden. That just wasn't going to happen.

If I had to guess, I'd say the results of the debate will either be neutral or a very slight bump for McCain. I find it hard to believe Biden won many votes, however his goal should have been to just not lose any votes and he very well could have done that.
This is almost word for word what most commentator are saying in the news over here - scary! (or is timvp really a foreign agent...)
The consensus seems to be that Biden won the debate by not losing it.

It's bad. I wanted to give her a tissue to wipe some off. That's been twice now. She needs more of a pink and less orange.
    Orange is the new black?

...The best description I heard was that Sarah Palin had good answers tonight- they just were not answers to the actual questions she was asked.
Also a point that is mentioned quite often.

Palin did all right. I think, at worst, she proved last night that she's not the problem with the McCain/Palin ticket.

The best way for me to describe how I feel when I watch Palin is that she diminishes women. When I watch her try to be cute and folksy, I feel like it is a slap in the face to every woman who got by on her intelligence and diligence. I feel the same way about anyone who does that when they are in the position to be representative of any demographic group. I just want to tell her to show some self-respect and dignity in herself- that she should be better than all that and be about substance. Young girls are watching her and thinking that this is the way to succeed- and I simply do not like her as any sort of role model for women to follow. When you are one of the first, you have to better and smarter and more prepared. I have a bachelor's degree in a male-dominated field, especially at the time I received it. Every professor I had in that department was a middle-aged male. I worked harder than any one of the guys in my program. It is what you do and I think she sets a poor example by the way she conducts herself in these interviews and debates. When McCain has to go to her follow-up interview with Couric, it diminishes me and all women who stand on their own and defend themselves. It lowers the respect that people have for women and that bothers me. So, no, I am not jealous or irrational. Quite frankly, I have nothing to envy in her. I have perfectly good reasons for thinking the way that I do when she tries to get by on charm and not substance.

What if she's not trying? What if that is just who she is? Does she diminish women just by being the woman that she is?

Wow, Whottt...are you angry because Palin talked circles in this debate?

I can't think of any woman in this thread that said they "hated" her last night...and I was here the entire evening.

I don't HATE Palin - I just think she's in way over her head...and the recent interviews (though the Gibson intvw still pisses me off!), and now the debate, pretty much confirmed what I was afraid of. She's not ready for the White House.

I said this earlier in the evening, and I'll say it again -
I'm sure she is a lovely woman. She seems extremely down-to-earth, and I love the fact that she hasn't changed who she is throughout the last few weeks...at least I don't think she has.

With that said though, I have a problem with her getting cutesy when she clearly doesn't have an answer to the question that was asked.
She's in a debate, for crying out loud...ANSWER THE QUESTIONS! Stop winking at the camera, and stop throwing around adorable phrases to try to mask the fact that you have no real, coherent answers.

And Joe? Please....he made me ill as well, and I said that throughout this thread. He had some seriously slimy grins he was sending her way...oh, and there was definitely a nasty glare thing he did near the beginning. I think he made a reference to the "Bridge to Nowhere." It's all kind of fuzzy now.

I think I was pretty fair throughout the debate.
To assume that women "hate" Palin because she's beautiful, successful, and folksy is just plain silly. It's as bad as the assumptions being thrown around that, if you don't vote for Obama, you must be a racist.

    Give me a break!

Believe it or not, women can be all the things Palin is and still answer questions intelligently and straightforward.
I did not get that from Palin tonight, and that's a shame.

Usually, Whottt, I love your posts...always entertaining and well thought out...but your assumptions, as of late, have been way off.

    I think I'm done - for now.

I still get that so many people still don't know what a VP does.. people are still acting like she is going to be the president on day one.. lets get back to the real debate between Obama and Mccain... thats who will make the policy decision...
