    Celtics have target

WALTHAM - Danny Ainge was on the telephone at his HealthPoint office when the NBA free agent market opened at midnight yesterday. Among Ainge’s first calls was to Bill Strickland, agent for center-forward Rasheed Wallace.

“I made some calls,’’ said Ainge, the Celtics’ president of basketball operations. “Rasheed is a guy we have interest in. We made calls with quite a few free agents’ representatives late last night from my office to let them know we have interest. We contacted 10 free agents and tried to get some feedback in what they are looking for and their interest long term. But that’s about it. Mostly for something down the road.’’

The Celtics’ interest in Wallace is not for the long term, though. Wallace, 34, might be the most intriguing of free agent candidates, his relationship with Celtics forward Kevin Garnett a possible advantage.

Strickland confirmed the Celtics’ contact with Wallace with a text message: “The interest is mutual.’’

Asked if Wallace, who earned $13 million with the Pistons last season, could join the Celtics as a mid-level exception, Strickland said: “We will see how things work out.’’

Charlotte, Cleveland, Orlando, and San Antonio have also shown interest in Wallace.

Ainge said he did not contact any players directly, nor has he made contract offers. Ainge said he has been on the receiving end of many more inquiries from agents in recent days than he has proferred.

“We’ll just continue to stay in contact with free agents to see if there is something we can do,’’ Ainge said. “That could take some time. Free agents are talking to several teams. I don’t anticipate anything dramatic happening any time soon. We have plenty of time left.

“We have an interest in a lot of free agents, on different levels. We have different needs. I think everybody’s trying to get a feel to where the market is. I think a lot of players start on July 1st with big dollar signs in their eyes, and then some of them get it, and some of them don’t. And some of them come looking for anything later in the summer.

“So, it will be interesting to see how the summer goes. There’s always guys who have big dollar signs who don’t get what they’re hoping for. That’s their agents’ job, to ask for whatever they can, and settle for what’s available.’’

Asked if the economic climate will affect the free agent market, Ainge said: “I’m not sure it’s that much different, but it might be. I think the whole pool is going to be less this year. But, again, there are going to be some that get paid and some that don’t.

“I think the initial indication of the market is you see a lot of guys expected to opt out of their contracts didn’t, and that’s a pretty good indication there might not be the cir stances or situations available to them they hoped that might have been there before.’’

According to Andy Miller, agent for Tyronne Lue - a reserve guard for Orlando who is close to Garnett - and forward Antonio McDyess, Ainge has expressed interest in both players. McDyess was expected to return to the Pistons, but began checking other options because Detroit signed Charlie Villanueva, who agreed in principle to a contract yesterday, according to the Associated Press.

Lue was on the Celtics’ list last year before Eddie House signed. House exercised a player option on the second year of his contract Tuesday.

“It’s great to have Eddie back,’’ Ainge said. “Eddie’s been a big part of our success the last two years. He’s a fan favorite, he’s a favorite of his teammates, they trust him. Shooting is a premium in this league and Eddie is a guy that would be tough to replace. Game 7, on the road, in Cleveland - KG would throw the ball to Eddie, Paul [Pierce] would throw the ball to Eddie. They trust him and his shooting and that’s what he does. He’s a great, great shooter.’’

The latest news is Rasheed is not going to Boston today. Instead the Celtics are going to Michigan to meet him.

Exactly, give Sheed the extra year, and if the Spurs start to notice his play downgrade after the 2nd year, they can try and trade him away. So if the 3rd year is the kicker, go for it

So it looks like there's a legit chance that he verbally agrees to go to Boston today, since they're all going out to meet him..just hope for the best..

The only good thing if he verbally agrees with Boston today is that the Spurs can move quickly on to the next target(s) instead of waiting longer on Wallace.

Sending players or an owner to Sheed house is damn ridiculous. What the are they going to say? "we want you"? Great...

It remembers me when Finley was waived from Dallas. Some teams send players and their whole staff to Finley house, Miami made giant banners... For Spurs, only Pop went to Finley's house. We all know who get Finley at the end.

If Spurs want Sheed, I expect Pop to go in his house to present him Spurs' project with him and maybe a call form Duncan to say that he would like to play with him. All the rest bring nothing to the situation. Sheed is a grown man and he will take an objective decision.

The most ridiculous has been Rockets pitch to get Gortat. Giving him emails from fans and a rockets jersey at his name.

Unfortunately that's what it has come too. Instead of players visting whichever cities they want to play for it's an ensemble of players/coaches/GM's/whatever going to said players choice of venue.

    KG didn't make the trip..

It ended up being the owner, Ainge, Rivers, and Pierce, according to some people that work where the private jet is kept..they already left a few hours ago according to people in Boston..so we might have an idea of what's going to happen soon enough..

I trust Pop though..there's just something about him that is persuasive..

    Sheed’s At ude

As we all know, the Spurs are amidst the pack of teams interested in signing Rasheed Wallace. Despite being a big man who can stretch the floor and defend the post, many Spurs fans are hesitant. Sheed is a tech factory and many are concerned that his penchant for on court theatrics could cause problems this upcoming season.

I’ll admit, I am not concerned about Sheed’s “at ude” whatsoever. In fact, I think our recent interest in Sheed is an excellent opportunity to articulate what personal characteristics the Spurs are concerned with and those that they disregard.

Despite some people’s impression, the Spurs are most concerned with what happens on the court. But the reality of the matter is, sometimes off-the-court situations impact what happens on the court. Does Sheed have any off-the-court activities with which we should be concerned? No, he does not. Despite being the most notable player on the “jailblazers,” Sheed has a pretty respectable personal history.

Similarly, the Spurs are concerned with “the locker room,” i.e. how the players mesh with one another. Good personal chemistry breeds good on-court chemistry. Is there any reason to suspect Sheed would be a problem in the locker room? No, there is not. Sheed is beloved by his teammates and well respected around the league. In fact, during Pistons-Spurs games the last few years, Tim Duncan and Sheed have often been seen joking around during timeouts and while positioned next to one another during free throws.

But even if a player is well liked by his teammates and doesn’t get in trouble off the court, he must still be willing to accept his role. Is Sheed a selfish player on the floor? No, he is not. The Pistons were considered a team-oriented unit and he was always willing to defer to players like Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton. Sheed has the ability to score, but he has always understood when to assert himself and when to take a step back.

Which brings us to the technicals. For the past several seasons in a row, Sheed has been at the top of the list of players who received the highest amount of technical fouls. He runs his mouth incessantly. Opposing players and the referees had best be prepared for a verbal throttling when Sheed’s on the floor. But is this a cause for serious concern? Personally, I think it isn’t.

Sheed’s penchant for drawing technicals is not a sign of his irreverence (at least not only). It is a sign of his passion. In games where he receives a technical, Sheed’s average rises in four major statistical categories (Points, Rebounds, Blocks, FTAs). Techs also provide him an opportunity to encourage a more impassioned style of play in his teammates (teammates who, as I’ve already mentioned, he nearly always has excellent relationships with). At the time it seems shortsighted: Was it really worth arguing that minor call and giving the opposing team a technical free throw? But when you look at the legacy of success Sheed has contributed to (both at Detroit and Portland), it seems to me that his theatrics may be worth suffering through.

The other criticism people bring up is his commitment: In a lot of people’s opinion, when the team struggles, Sheed quits. Although I think it is slightly overstated, this is a legitimate concern. That being said, I am not that worried about it. If Sheed signs with the Spurs, we will contend, no questions asked. As always, injury can derail any team. But as currently composed, the Spurs are already a contender. Add Sheed to the mix and we slide toward the head of the pack. It’s regrettable that Sheed can be easily disheartened or distracted when the team is struggling. But when he has played for contenders, he has always played brilliantly.

I also think Spurs fans should consider the effort given by every Spur not named Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, George Hill, and Bruce Bowen in games 4 and 5 of the first round of this season’s NBA playoffs. If you are looking for a group of guys to criticize for quitting when the chips are down, there is you answer.

I still don't see how it works for Boston..

I don't see Wallace coming off the bench..and if they give him the starting spot, then there's no way a guy with Perkins' ego is accept a demotion..

If Rasheed came that would be interesting to see whether he or Pop will be the guy for the "get a tech to wake up the team" argument. Best case scenario they can share the duties and both get ejected less. Worse case scenario they might pool their rage and murder and consume Joey Crawford during a live NBA telecast.
