That trade doesn't work salary-wise.
And I would hope these two get traded in the offseason.
Best case scenario:
Spurs sign McDyess for the MLE. Spurs get Bowen to come back as a player/ tutor role ala Lindsey Hunter for the minimum . Clippers fall to 20 games out of the 8th seed in late January. We offer Finley/ Bonner/ Williams and a 1st for Camby. Then Hairston/ Williams/ Gists or someone else from Summer League/ Training Camp/ or Toros earns a significant role to take Finley's minutes at the back up SF spot only if Bowen doesn't come back.
Or even if he does come back having Hairston or one of those players show significant improvements in their game would be a plus.
That would leave us with:
Parker/ Hill
Mason/ Manu / (*McClinton)
RJ/ (* Hairston/Williams/ Gist/) or resign Bowen for the minumum
Duncan/ Blair/ Haislip
Camby/ McDyess/ Mahimni

Include Williams and its successful.
I hope we trade for something this off season, Id rather have a spot go to Hairston rather then Williams.
I don't believe the news about Avery not coming to Detroit will have any effect one way or another in Dice's decision. Nor will our limited cap space or the fact that we're a team in a re-building mode. He's not motivated by a big payday. If all we had was 1.5M to offer him, I don't think that would be cause for him to go elsewhere. His motivation is not about money. Nor is it about a ring. As much as he wants one, he's said he won't be a Karl Malone or Gary Payton chasing a ring in his latter years. He's resigned himself to the belief that he had his chance to get a Championship, but wasn't able to get it done. If the Spurs can sell to him that he and his family will be happy in SA, he'll go there. But it won't primarily be about the $$ or the ring. How he interprets 'happy' and 'comfortable' is anyone's guess.
Personaly, I'm hoping you all get him. We don't need him. We're going with a youth movement, looking to write a new chapter. I'd rather get Bass. And more than anything, I'd love to see Duncan hand him the trophy. There's no one in the entire league I'd rather see win a ring than Antonio. The man is one of a kind and deserves it.
The only realistic trade I can think would make us BETTER is a trade for Camby. And for some crazy reason I think Clippers actually believe they can make a playoff run therefore, with their trade for Randolph happening freeing up time for Camby, it won't be as easy to get him right now. We might have to wait til January to get him for just expirings and a 1st.
As usual...great!![]()
I agree but it can't hurt ! good post as usual

Detroit Pistons target McDyess, Bass as third free agent
Posted by Dave Dial July 07, 2009 11:22AM
The cap space that the Pistons will have left after signing Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva isn't know yet, but Joe Dumars has an idea on how much he will have to offer a third free agent to go along with his two bigger acquisitions.
July 7, Detroit Free Press: Although it may take time to play itself out, the Pistons would like to bring back power forward Antonio McDyess, an unrestricted free agent. But with likely compe ion coming from more le-ready teams like Cleveland and San Antonio, the Pistons are looking at other options. And that could lead them to Mavericks power forward Brandon Bass, an unrestricted free agent. Bass' agent, Tony Dutt, said Monday the Pistons have inquired about his client, and there is mutual interest. In free agency, the difference between a $3 million dollar starting salary and a $5 million dollar starting salary is huge. In a 5-year deal, with 8% raises, that's a difference of almost $12 million dollars.
"We see it as a great situation that we would like to explore at some time," Dutt said. "It's an organization that has the respect of players."...
The Pistons will have $3 million to $5 million to spend on either McDyess, 34, or Bass. And despite last season's 39-43 record, the Pistons remain an attractive place for free agents. "I've known Joe for a long time, and things will be back the way they need to be sooner rather than later," Dutt said.
Last season the salary cap was set at $58.68 million dollars, and many have predicted a free-fall in that number this summer. Although I've maintained if the cap does drop, it will be minimal(if at all). In fact, I expect a slight increase.
Saying that. let's use the old cap number of $58.68 million to figure out how much the Pistons will have to spend on a third free agent this summer. The signing of Ben Gordon has been reported from a 5-year $50 million dollar contract to a 5-year $55 million dollar contract, and Charlie Villanueva has been reported to have signed for the same amount of years but ranging from $35-$40 million dollars. Let's take the most reported numbers for now. That would be the $55 million for Gordon and the $35 million for Villanueva.
With those salaries, and 8% raises, that would be a starting salary of $9.48 million for Gordon and $6.1 million for Villanueva. That would put the Pistons cap number around $53.5 million.
Using those figures and using the current salary cap, that would give the Pistons over $5.1 million left to use on another free agent. Even if you took the high salaries that have been reported for both Gordon and Villanueva, the Pistons would still have around $4.4 million in cap space left if the Salary cap is at least as high as it was last season.
If Joe Dumars has $5.1 million to offer a third free agent, that could be a 5-year contract worth almost $30 million dollars. So, depending on what the salary cap is set at, Joe still has a lot to work with and could add another player to the Piston roster that could really help next season. Stay tuned...
bass really just makes more sense for detroit.
Well at least we know the Spurs are after him...
We love Dice would like him to go for a chance to win a ring. Please take him he won't win with us not anytime soon.
I really want Duncan/Parker/Ginobili/RJ to win another ring, please, take them!![]()
Well aware of that..
But the decision is ultimately up to him.. I feel that his loyalty will keep him in Detroit.
Not sure what Dumars is selling him? Come on we can be the 7th seed if you come back.
Mentor Charile V and get money?
Brazil, I merged your thread in here because it was already posted in here and because Bruno had already debunked the writer's salary cap math.![]()
I actually messaged him about this:
Makes sense.
Me: According to every other site I've looked at, Maxiell is due 5M, not 4.3M
Dave Dial: Yes, I've seen those numbers too. What's known is that Maxiell signed a 4-year $20 million dollar extension. What's not know is how the contract is structured. I don't know why Hoopshype(or the others) has the contract at $5 million each of the four years, that's not the way contracts are usually signed.
Contracts are usually signed with raises included in them. Being the Pistons had Maxiell's Bird Rights, I have him making $4.3, $4.8, $5.2 and $5.7 million the next 4 years. Which equals the $20 million. I don't see why Dumars would not have done it this way, because it allows him to have more cap space this summer. Which he knew that he wanted cap space in 2009 or 2010.
So until it's proven that Maxiell's contract is without raises and is just a straight $5 million each year, I'm keeping what I have. It's the usual way to structure contracts.
Will he hurry up and make a damn decision already!![]()
Free-agent buzz: McDyess eyes Spurs
By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports
Jul 6, 9:32 pm EDT
The San Antonio Spurs have emerged as the leader in the courtship of free-agent forward Antonio McDyess, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
San Antonio is one of three teams offering the full mid-level exception over two years, sources said. No deal is imminent, but it’s believed McDyess has offers from the Orlando Magic and possibly the Cleveland Cavaliers.
McDyess is considered one of the best unrestricted free agents on the market, and could complete a terrific offseason makeover for the Spurs as they retool for another championship run.
“He’s definitely been wrestling with this [decision],” one league executive said.
Detroit president Joe Dumars still wants to re-sign McDyess, but needs to clear more space to make a compe ive offer.
McDyess, 34, averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds for the Pistons last season.
Maxiell get his extension before the Billups trade, so cap space in 2009 wasn't a factor.
Shamsport has a $5M salary in 09/10. He doesn't makes guesses. If he said that it's a flat structure, it's because he learned it from a league source.
I'm at 99% sure it's $5M for Maxiell.
Please Dice, choose SA.
ok no problem, thx timvp. Bruno is clearer regarding cap math than any other sources anyway.
Come on Dice, your on your last set of wheels. Go for it dude!
