    @ Halo fanboys.

Halo was the FPS to own for... well, never. It was never in the same league as Counterstrike, and now MW has taken whatever kind of "lead" it had in the tactical console FPS multiplayer department. Halo is now at best an "above-average" shooter, and far from the pinnacle of the genre. But hey, if you aren't going to at least try out a better/different game, have fun with what you got. To each his/her own.
i personally love all the halo games ive played it since halo CE, also when halo 3 hit in 07 , most people just brought an xbox just for halo 3. now dont get me wrong even though i love halo 3 i play and try out diffrent shooters and games other than halo 3 , i already pre-ordered MW2 because it looks bad ass plus i only liked MW1 , i never really liked WAW, and the most reason why i like and play halo3 is because i have fun at the tournaments and live events with my team which are really fun.

Halo was a revolutionary game, make no mistake. It was the first pinnacle of FPS since Goldeneye for the 64 (some say Perfect Dark as well).

However, Halo 2 and 3 were pretty large letdowns. Not because they were horrible, but they didn't completely revolutionize FPS games like the first one did. Gears of War 2 was arguably a more anticipated game than Halo 4 will be, although it appears the GoW series has fallen off from the original as well.

There's a reason MW2 is being called the best shooter of all-time (aside from Counterstrike) by many people. It's head and shoulders above anything before it on a console, and on PC it's absolutely brilliant.

However, Halo 3 was a serious step back in the series. It garnered excellent initial reviews, but the appeal has not remained, for good reason. Bungie stopped innovating with the series. No offense, but most of the people who buy Halo buy it in the first week. The next Halo game could suck horribly and it would still sell millions of copies. It's a series made on reputation now, and it's already been surpassed by more balanced FPS games.

ok, i can kind of agree , like when sometimes i play halo 3 it doesnt feel like halo anymore how it used to be , like all the updates they come out with its ruining the game. Like in halo CE which i loved the guns were far way more better than the guns in halo 3. Like you said Halo 3 ODST could suck and still sell alot but i think this game will be better than halo 3 and halo 2 even though there isnt going to be any more master cheif in it they are bringing him back in Halo Reach. i know your not a halo fan but do you think Halo 3 Odst will be a good FPS?

Sure. It'll be a very good FPS. Nothing wrong with that.

The problem is that we're currently in the golden age of FPS games. A "very good" FPS released in any given year might not even make the top 10 FPS games of the year. Last year there were several absolutely outstanding releases.

I've been playing Halo A LOT this week after owning it forever and rarely ever playing and I will say this: It's been nice having the theater, bungie profile, etc.

Gameplay wise, MW is the game IMO, but I hope IW and/or Activision take a few cues from Bungie and up their level of player support when it comes to servers, stats, gimmicks, etc.

It's been pretty cool toying around with that aspect of Halo 3.

I regret clicking on this thread as it informed me that there's a Beatles Rock Band game coming out. This is a guitar player's worst ing nightmare, because I don't think any of us would be playing if not for those four (or for some other famous guitarist that got into it because of The Beatles). As a guitar player it's like, in my blood, to absolutely ing hate these games... but at the same time there's this side of me saying nothing with the Beatles name on it can be bad.

tl/dr; J.T.'s probably buying his first guitar/band instrument peripheral game ever and he doesn't know how to feel about it yet.

I honestly don't see how anyone could call Halo 3 a 'let down.' They achieved everything they were aiming for, and pulled it off well. Great SP. Great MP. Vehicles and a wide variety of weapons. Killer gfx and sound. Lots of information available to be used in any way you want, like in depth stats after games (cod still doesnt have it despite both 4 and waw arriving afterwards), ability to save replays of games/screenies, etc.

if its not your forte, okay. But no matter what criteria you use, I think its safe to say Halo 3 is not a 'letdown.'

If I'm picking out of these, it's MW2, but of course, I'd go with Madden..I'm a sports game guy. Prototype was the tho.

Dragon Age/Origins from the Bioware folks. This rpg has been in development for over 5 years and looks massive. Evidently there are 6 basic character classes you can go with and each class provides a unique storyline to play through. Looks to be one of those games you can invest hundreds of hours in.

Is it coming out this fall? I thought that was slated for next year going off a preview in GI.

Seems Halo is personal to you. Halo is fun and all that, but is geared to online play. In which still dominates just as much as cod if not more.

What draws a lot of people to be "halo fanboys" is the world behind it. Check out the books, even though the games steered off a different direction it offers an awesome sci-fi story.

Halo in fact did dominate for a long time based on sales and popularity. If you are saying it's not as fun because it's not as technical fps games then that is your opinion that I disagree with.

ODST doesn't even look good to me and I am a mild Halo fan. Halo Wars was just pathetic and laughable.

I've been playing guitar for about 9 years, and I love ROck Band. Its nothing when compared to the feeling of actually playing guitar/drums/bass but its not supposed to be.

There is a fantastic article about the game in the NYTimes and it also has some interesting points about the whole "musicians against Rock Band/Guitar Hero" belief.

The way I've always looked at it is that its simply a new way to experience music, and if it gets more people to want new music and not simply songs to fill up their Ipod then I'm all for it.

Well, its apples to oranges in this case. it's hard to pick up a basketball when you're feeling lazy or fat from a meal. It's not easy to start hunting people down a la cod. But you can generally pick up a guitar and play any time. So why would a guitarist, who knows he could be a lot better (that's every musician), waste his time fake playing? That's how I feel about it, anyways. Not guilty, just stupid for faking what I could be actually practicing.

for people who don't want to play anything, I can understand perfectly why these games are so appealing. Yet then again, I see people who can play so incredibly fast on youtube ... just think if you put all those hours in on a real instrument ..

I wouldn't agree with that; I don't see how learning to play a guitar is anymore accessible than picking up a basketball. Can't I be too lazy to learn to play a real instrument? Playing guitar hero and playing a real guitar aren't really alike. I don't know how to play the guitar (sax for me), my sister does, but we both enjoy GH/RB. Just like being a master at Dance Dance revolution doesn't mean you know how to dance

Can't you ask the same question for people that buy racing wheels to play Gran Turismo or flight joystick for Flight simualtor? Why not learn the real thing?

That's exactly what I'm getting at. I suck at dancing and haven't ever really played it, but I've seen some who were really good. Yet to someone who is a pro, its probably not that enticing IMO.

Basketball requires a hoop to yield the maximum benefits. I understand your point still, but I honestly don't liken playing basketball to playing guitar whatsoever. You might get sore fingers or a rash from sitting wrong while bball will tear you up after a few possessions. Racing at high speeds or flying airplanes, both quite expensive endeavors as well, are not exactly comparable to playing a guitar if you ask me.

I mean, do people who play racing games ever actually race at high speeds? Most don't I'd bet on it. Same with a flight simulator. Most people won't ever even get a chance, or would want it. But its a fun game.

ehh i have more but i'm tired, everything seems hazy. what i'm trying to say is it, to me alone, it seems like if you're already a guitar or drummer or bassist or singer you'd be better off improving on your instruments than wasting time faking that exact same thing, though the songs are jammin'. About the people who put in all the hours, like I said guitar is cheap racing formula cars and flying jets is not. I think that's what jt was saying (concerning the in our blood comment) too but I'm unsure.

I'm going with CoDMW2. However, Bioshock 2 with the addition of MP could be the sickest of the bunch. No doubt it will blow MW2 single player out of the water. It's just that Bio2's multiplayer is an unknown right now, and I have to go with the known. Mass Effect 2 will be off the hook as well. BTW, if it ain't on a PC, it ain't worth playin'.

I know what you're saying, but I just think it depends on the person. I personally find playing basketball more accessible than learning the guitar. My sister tried when I was younger to teach me to play, but I was never interested.

I think to a degree that GH/RB are nothing like playing a real instrument. If you played the PS2 games Amplitude and Frequency (basically precursors for GH), you'd just use the PS2 controller to stay on beat with the songs. GH/RB is basically the same thing, except they used a guitar accessory to capture the 'feel' of being in a band. I mean, the guitar is five color coded buttons. It doesn't even compare to a real guitar in any way except the shape.

I never really get why there are SO many people out there that equate popularity with quality. If that's the case, Britney Spears is one of the greatest singers, Backstreet Boys/N'Sync are better than the Beatles, and Shania Twain is the best solo vocalist since 1993.

Popularity != quality. But if you really want to go down that road, there are still over 7 million Counterstrike players. Not bad for a game that's now over 10 years old.

What draws a lot of people to be "halo fanboys" is the world behind it. Check out the books, even though the games steered off a different direction it offers an awesome sci-fi story.
I've browsed through a couple. I was not impressed. There was far too much writing just for the sake of making the characters look as ridiculously powerful as possible. Something pretty common for the genre but by no means original.

Halo in fact did dominate for a long time based on sales and popularity. If you are saying it's not as fun because it's not as technical fps games then that is your opinion that I disagree with.
Isn't that all we're talking about here in the first place? Opinions. Obviously (and I'm not the only one with the opinion that Halo is not up to par with other FPS games). However, I've been a gamer since I was 4. If you'll read back a little I stated that the first Halo was an amazing, inventive, fresh FPS that hadn't been equaled on console since the N64 days (and if you remember the reception that Goldeneye 64 got, you'll understand what I mean). This is what gave the game such rabid popularity. Recent iterations have been letdowns. That's all I said. It sounds like a struck a nerve, because apparently not thinking every Halo game is god's gift to gamers is something you can't accept as a fanboy.

Racing at high speeds or flying airplanes, both quite expensive endeavors as well, are not exactly comparable to playing a guitar if you ask me.
    +1

If you're playing GT5 Prologue and your hand slips off the wheel, barreling headlong into a wall results in a loss of time. As opposed to the real world, where it could be thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix the car, plus whatever medical bills you will incur from wrecking. Piloting an airplane is basically death if you make a serious mistake.

I think people like GH (myself included) because it's easy and there is direct positive reinforcement involved. Nothing more, nothing less. You can play your favorite songs with your friends, in your living room, and still get a tiny glimmer of what it's like to be a band on a stage.

What I would love to see is a Guitar Hero/Rock Band game with real instruments. I would buy that game instantly even if it were $300 (or if they made it $100 and featured a way you could plug any electric instrument into the game).

    My 2 cents-

I'd agree Halo is not up to par when compared to other FPS's on the market.

That's why I enjoy it. With CoD, if I'm feeling tired or lazy, I'm not going to want to play... or do well. The gameplay is so advanced that it's literally physically and mentally draining for me to play. It requires abundant energy, ambient silence, good headphones, better weed and paranoid attention to detail.

Halo on the other hand, requires no concerted amount of energy. I feel like I can throw it on, turn up my PTI podcast in the background and just sort of run around without thinking... And do fairly well.

So yeah, I don't think it's anywhere near as great a game as some others, but it's definitely a lot more casual and relaxed and therefore serves a function. At least for me.
