I have been doing this for awhile now with my portable passport hd witch I love because its usb powered so I just plug in 1 wire.
My brother will borrow it also because it works with the PS3 also. They seem to look better on the ps3 than on xbox. I need a bigger hd tho. I'm leaning towards a 1tb for home and carrying what I need on the passport hd.

Hard disks usually aren't formatted unless you're buying them used. Just pop it in and right click format or go to disk manager and go from there. Use the outdated fat32 and you're ready to go.

If you dont know how to plug a hard drive in, then use the google.
