Mr and Mrs Ellis are going to move to a MUCH BIGGER house, in the midst of an era when millions of other houses are being foreclosed. I think I should seriously consider changing my job and getting any train required to become a professional writer like timvp and his wife, probably I can never be as great a writer as L.J. or his wife is, but I'm pretty sure my articles will reach and final exceed the levels of those written by these so-called NBA specialists like John Hollinger and Marc Stein.

It would be a drive, but the outlet in SM has clearance prices on out of season furniture for places like Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn (I mean like last year's models; I don't know if that made sense). They're still pricy, but it's beautiful stuff at good prices and if you talk to the manager, they'll tell you what days they mark things down. There's also a North Carolina Direct across from the outlet mall with good prices on good furniture.

Star or Louis Shanks, depending on your budget.

I have not been in there, but at IH10 and DeZavala where the Barnes and Noble used to be there is now some sort of Louis Shanks outlet/clearance type store. You might be able to find some really nice stuff at reduced prices.

Since we are moving to a much larger house, I need to buy a bunch of furniture.
I think your logic here is backwards - you need a larger house, when you have too much stuff to put in the old one. Anyway what is wrong with empty rooms?

It's been a while but I had good luck at Stowers. http://www.stowersfurniture.com/ We've purchased several Bernhart http://www.bernhardt.com/ sofa & love seats from them.

The furniture I've seen from Ashley has all been pretty poor quality - don't know how representative that is if everything there.

If you're looking for an excuse for a mini road trip - maybe fold in a trip to Lockhart for some goood BBQ - there a few spots in Austin I know about.

If you're loking for something a little different, Four Hands in Austin has some cool stuff:

    http://www.fourhandshome.com/

Crate & Barrel has some underrated stuff - clean lines, modern but still comfortable. There's an outlet in San Marcos but when I've been there it's been hit & miss - but it would be worth checking out of you go to the Restoration Hardware & Pottery Barn outlets. They have a full store in Austin:

    http://www.crateandbarrel.com/furniture/

I've been looking at asian - inspired stuff lately, and there are a couple cool websites:

    http://www.greenteadesign.com/
    http://www.gingkofurniture.com/
    http://www.mariayee.com/index.php

My favorite store right now is Room and Board:http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/
Been very happy with everything I've purchased from there. They have a summer clearence sale going on right now, I believe.

I would second that. I live near a large Amish community and looked at buying a dining table made by them. It was out of my price range, but the quality was amazing. Not sure how you would get it to SA without costing an arm and a leg though.

If you can be patient and buy things on sale, you will save a fortune.

But asking a woman to be patient.....
I actually am being patient. We aren't moving until end of September... so I'm shopping over the next two months.

It would be a lot of empty rooms. We are moving from a house that is 1700 sq feet with minimal furniture to a house that is ~4300 sq feet on 2 1/2 acres. We have worked hard over the last couple years and kept spending limited, so we are going to create a nice home for ourselves now.

What do you need all of that room for? You guys are always online, you could probably live in a phone booth if it had internet access.

You guys aren't even having kids right?

Some pieces I'm willing to splurge on... dining table/chairs and living room couch. But then I need a bunch of side items like side tables, bookcase, some chairs and other stuff.
That's exactly what my wife and I did. We splurged on a few pieces from Copenhagen but we also got a few things at Rooms to Go, Dillards and even the Sears outlet. We've bought quite a few things at Motif. They have more modern stuff like Copenhagen but less $$$. The only thing we have from IKEA is a couple of tall wall units. We started from scratch in this house two years ago. Good luck!

I don't know if this is the case anymore, but 5 or so years you could fly to North Carolina, buy a truck load of furniture, drive it back and still save tons of money. Well worth it if you're outfitting your entire house.

We've been very happy with our entertainment center puchase from Stowers. Wonderful, wonderful quality.

There is also a store in the Quarry shopping center (Interior Ideas maybe) that does custom furniture from Norwalk. Huge selection of fabric and the frames have a lifetime guarantee. We have a couch, chair, and dining room chairs from Norwalk and they're also a great quality.

What style do you like? I love the new lines from Ethan Allen, a mix of traditional furniture with very clean lines.

Some place I haven't seen mentioned is John Williams Interior. I haven't been there in a while, but always found something drool-worthy when I went in. There is one on the I-10 access road close to Pappadeux if I remember correctly.

Our bed and a few other pieces are Pennsylvania House, all wood, beautiful and hold up very well. Not sure what stores in town carry them. Plus, very reasonably priced.

I have to warn you about Star Furniture. Everyone I know, myself included, has had problems with the furniture when it's arrived (torn fabric, messed up finishes), and their customer service was horrible to deal with for all of us. It was so bad, many of us ended up having the furniture picked up and cancelling the order. This was for the Austin and the San Antonio stores.

I just moved again (twice in two months, ugh) and bought some new things from West Elm and Pottery Barn. You can find some really chic accent pieces there that are reasonably priced.

What side of town are you guys moving to?

Have you considered going to some estate sales? You can find some great pieces at them.
