One other thing to consider is if Pop already thinks this team can't compete with Tony being as hobbled as he is, and this season is basically already done. Kinda like last season when Manu went down. In that case it makes sense to hold on to the expiring contracts, doesn't it?

I posted this elsewhere. but ill put it here as well. Just a thought, if the spurs end up not making a move.

No trade happening DOES NOT equal "r.c/pop did not try." Just like the RJ deal not working out does not make pop/r.c idiots. The fact that no other team wanted our bench players or Jefferson does not mean that the spurs weren't on the phone the last week trying to make the team better.

Assuming Pop did not try or did not want a trade because one did not hapen is silly.

The Bucks taking Salmons for expirings really hurts the Spurs' chances of landing Ty Thomas. Now the Spurs will have to offer a first round pick to have a chance.
I think we were always going to have to offer our 1st. We can debate the value of Salmons all day, but I highly doubt ownership would have approved taking on more salary next year.

We can only speculate because they're obviously pretty tight lipped. But the reality is that trades get done with other teams, and those teams are not as tight lipped. That's why you see articles like 'Spurs shopping RJ'.

One other thing is clear: The past offseason the FO thought we needed to upgrade, and they went out there determined to get done and got RJ and Dice.
So, you know, you see the people being traded and what they're getting traded for, and you have to try to make sense of why the Spurs were not in play.

It's a great thing when they get a guy like Hill, it's a horrible thing when they sign a guy like Keith Bogans and play him significant minutes..

Just thinking of trades, Would anybody do any of these(And do you think other teams would)?
    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=yklld3m
    Jefferson Out
Maggette, Gadzuric in(6.6 EC Next year)

Mil Gets Jefferson, gives up Ridnour, Gadzuric(Maintains 2011 Capspace with RJ, Redd coming off books)
    GS Maggette Out
    Ridnour in(Expiring)

RJ To Indiana for Dunleavy and Rush
    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=yf4pbol

RJ to Minnesota for Blount, Sessions, Gomes
    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=yke48sq

    RJ for J Rich

Basically , Just looking at options that are roughly cap neutral, don't affect teams plans for free agency(I think Milwaukee and Indy are aiming at 2011, Minny I'm not sure), the Phoenix deal is roughly cap neutral.

The Sacramento Kings have reached an agreement in principle with the Houston Rockets on a trade that will swap Kevin Martin(notes) for Tracy McGrady(notes), league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Along with Martin, the Kings will send Sergio Rodriguez, Hilton Armstrong(notes) and Kenny Thomas(notes) to the Rockets. Joey Dorsey(notes) and Carl Landry(notes) will go to the Kings.

pretty good move for houston.. wonder if kings will reroute tmac to new york

In regards to the Houston trade, I can't say I really like it from their perspective. I've become accustomed to some shrewd maneuverings from Houston the past few years but I don't really like Kevin Martin over much. Furthermore, Landry is a good player they gave up for him...

I wouldn't be surprised if Houston actually got worse after this trade.

You know how this trade deadline is like the menstruation period for NBA teams when teams unload their old blood for new blood to come in and take its place. The Spurs are too old for all of these. They have already reached menopause.

Awesome for the Rockets. Not sure about losing Carl Landry, though, but our donation of Luis Scola (in perpetuity) to them makes this possible. Maybe we can give them DeJuan Blair as well?

I would be glad to help get you free from that process for a period as long as almost a year if your ethnicity were a different one than what it really is. You're quite a smart/creative woman TBH and such level of creativity is especially precious for females who in general are rarely given such instincts.

what teams are left that haven't traded?

    I guess . . .

The Spurs can dump expirings + a 1st for Troy Murphy.

Why would the Spurs do this? We shouldn't make a trade just to make a trade.

The Spurs are in the unfortunate position that they are compe ive but not close to true contenders. I think it is too great a risk for them to take on a long big money contract at this point because it likely won't put us over the top. At the same time they obviously don't want to straight salary dump players because there is still some hope that arrangements can be made to create a championship team.

The only thing they can do at this point is try and trade less important expirers (non-Manu expirers) for a significant player. But who is going to agree to that trade? No one most likely, and that is why no trade is being made. It has nothing to do with the Front Office not trying or not caring, its simply that they are not in a position to make any useful trades for the team.

Out of the trades that have been made so far..

The Cavs are obviously super le contenders at this point and its understandable they might be willing to take a risk on a longer contract because it may realistically win them a le. Add to the fact they want to appease Lebron and the trade makes good sense.

The Mavs took on Butler, Haywood and Stevenson at relatively low risk since Haywood and Stevenson are expirers themselves and Butler is on a 2-year contract. I can guarantee you it won't put them in le contention however.

Houston traded away Carl Landry, their best player for Kevin Martin and scrubs while giving up a huge asset in Tracey McGrady's expiring contract. I sincerely hope for the Rockets something else is set to go down because if not they got robbed. They will probably get worse this year from that trade and they are now locked into Martin's 4-year 40million deal (an injury prone SG that can score but not much else).

The rest of the trades made thus far are rather inconsequential. In my opinion only the Cavs trade was really worth it because they are in a position to win the le and adding Jamison both fits their system and puts them over the top in terms of simple talent.

The point is really, trades are a difficult and dangerous game. We could just as easily harm ourselves with a trade as help, and many of the proposed trades here seem to be without any regard to finance and future. Its easy to say make this trade or that, but its harder to fix the mess two years down the road.

They shouldn't, it was a joke.

But considering how much Pop loves Matt Bonner it wouldn't surprise me to see them trade for an upper-middle class man's Bonner.
