When I was in Canada in line to make a purchase the owner was speaking French to everyone in front of me.
I got kind of nervous trying to figure out if my merci would sound proper and before I was ready the owner was already speaking to me in English. I’m in good shape so I did not think I was singled out for being fat American. so I asked how the owner knew I was American. She said I dressed too casually for vacation and that Americans generally did this. Blue Jeans and a fkn T shirt … Damn I’m up there kayaking and I gotta dress up? (Just thought about this incident from the picture, weird…)

Maradona played in 4 world cups: '82 (was eliminated in a group that had champions Italy, and one of the best Brazilian teams ever), '86 (champion and best player), '90 (voted third best player and took Argentina to the finals with an ankle looking like this:

and '94 (Argentina steamrolled through the first 2 matches with him, and only lost once taken off the court in a dubious procedure).

As for Messi, he was called upon the first squat at 18 in '06 and was only given a few minutes in a couple of games total in that WC. In '10 Argentina reached the quarterfinals, in '14 made the finals (deserved to win) and was voted best player, in '18 lost to champions France, in '22 won the WC and was voted best player yet again.

All in all, Maradona was truly involved in 3 World Cups (1 champion, 1 final, 1 best player, 1 third best player) and Messi in 4 (1 champion, 1 final, the others lost to champion France and 3rd place Germany, and twice got best player).

I'd take some mind numbing idiotic logic to try to pass those accolades as unimpressive, but to each their own I guess.
