It's a good tv. Don't worry about the 720p. They don't even broadcast in 1080p yet just 1080i except maybe directv? I'm not sure. Either way its a good tv, especially to get for free.

My wife gave me an angered look when I said "It's only 720 and not 1080".
    Well, somewhat understandable.

Now you understand your electric bill will increase as you use it. The heat from plasma, extra running of the AC...

720P is fine for most people, probably won't know the difference with that size. DVD's, cable, and satellite will probably look no different that on a 1080P. You will probably only see the difference with BluRay movies, or something like a PS3, X-Box, etc.

Myself, buying one a few months back, I bought a 1080P. Cannot complain for free.

Is what my wife won at her Company Picnic. Is it a good on or not?

She just brought it home tonight. is the 720p too low to enjoy?
    Just looked it up:

    Joe,

Do you plan on buying a Blu-ray player?
On that note, if you plan to keep that TV, or get another, buy the same brand Blu-ray player. The Samsung is a sweet pair. Nice to use the same remote also. I've seen the Samsung players for as little as about $150, but they are normally about $180. Picked up my Samsung 1080P 40" LCD and BluRay player for $780 together.

First time I saw Letterman with Sylvester Stallone as his guest, in HD, was an eye opening experience to say the least.

I'm not going to lie, I was a bit scared.

    Joe,

Do you plan on buying a Blu-ray player? If not than 720p isn't that big of a deal. It will handle dvd upconverts fine from a DVD player. You probably won't miss much with digital cable either.

Congrats on the TV. If you do decide you want Bluray awesomeness, then I'd suggest putting it up on craigslist & just seeing what you can get for it. Panasonic has a 42" 1080P for $130 more
Edit: all of this is addressed to JC, sorry for the confusion.

Seeing as this is a spurs related website, your sports are going to come in GREAT as long as you have an HD box. Sports are only broadcast in 720p for the time being and you will absolutely notice a difference.

What you have to do is go to Time Warner, exchange your box for an HD box, and then go to the avs forums and look up the best calibration settings. (yes guys I did that on purpose).

BTW the tv i just bought is a rebranded version of exactly the tv that you won. I have a 1080p dlp and I have to say that this 720p plasma is actually quite impressive. The color is ridiculous, and the blacks are like true black yo. Basically for everything other than Blu-ray disks, and PS3 games, you are pretty much going to not notice much of a difference. From what I gather, neither of those things will be a big loss for you.

Higher electric bill!?!? I don't plan on getting a blueray player. If I use those fancy hdmi cables will that be better on my DVD player?
Also need to go exchange my box with TWC to a HD dvr. Am also thinking of going to Dish.
So far I do like the picture but am waiting to get the HD box.
Thanks everyone for the comments. Did mouse post in his thread? He lives?

I don't think a regular DVD player supports HDMI, does it?

Definitely use HDMI or DVI for the cable box or satellite receiver. Component, S-Video, or AV limits the quality.

What I don't like about my cable provider is the signal if HD, but they compress it so much, it looks ty.

    As for the electrical cost...

the plasma screen, all 42" of it, gets pretty warm, doesn't it? Cost of producing that heat, and cost of cooling, right?

Shouldn't really be a big difference, but I had to mention it. My next TV will be LED.

as for signal speeds, HDMI does up to 10.2 giga-bit/sec and 2160P. DVI is up to 3.96 giga-bit/sec and is actually a computer standard up to WQXGA (2560 x 1600).

Plasma doesn't get hot anymore, you are thinking about pre-2006 (or so) plasmas. They are a lot better technology now, and you don't really have to worry about excess electricity for either the TV or the AC. I just checked and touched my plasma screen and it is actually cool to the touch, in fact it is energy star rated. Like I said, it is the same TV as he has, so I am sure he doesn't have to worry about this either.

My mom just bought a Samsung 55" LED 3D tv. It looks awesome with the blu-ray. Blu-ray movies are freaking amazing to watch. The clarity is so damn crisp it's crazy! I notice I never noticed before in movies.

The 3D aspect is cool even though we only have one 3D movie that came with it. But it's still pretty great to watch.

I plan to buy a 40" LED in a few months. For my room and to put my xbox on there.

No NEED to get a blu-ray player if you're not big into that type of stuff, but I would recommend getting an upconverting DVD player... it takes your normal dvd's and attempts to make them 720p. They're not perfect but they are better than your normal DVD player. Those will output in HDMI for sure. We've had a couple of them - each one was a different quality, but again, still better than your old and they're relatively cheap (< $100). I assume you don't have one, but as a potential excuse... the PS3 is the best upconverter I've seen - does an awesome job, and naturally, is a blu-ray player as well.

Congrats Joe! Sounds like an awesome TV...

The only thing is, what is your cable provider, i'm uncertain of 720p, but I'd assume you'd need to upgrade to an HD box and get an HDMI cable so that you can enjoy the clearer picture. Pretty awesome though!
