The Obama's total wealth is not that much. They can't afford to be paying their own way for every vacation.
Right. They're only millionaires. Maybe we need some tax cuts so that millionaires can afford to take vacations.

Not that we can afford it either, but where were these complainers during the Bush years?
The same place where those who complained about Bush's vacations are now.

Wow, such compassion from Miss M… Now that there is criticism, we get to hear the touchy feely reasons she had to go on a lavish trip with her fellow community organizers… She could have seen her "friend" who was grieving in the White House…How boring… She could have gone to the lady's home in Chicago…Windy City in August is hot & muggy…I think not…...Instead she wasted millions of dollars in taxpayer money to go to Spain with her possie…To visit a grieving friend who lives in Chicago?…All makes perfect sense now…. She may hate America, but boy can "Mic e Antoinette" Obama spend taxpayer’s money…No wonder why this is the first time in her life she is proud to be an American…

prove it[/QUOTE=Fox News, May 2002]WASHINGTON — Laura Bush is focusing on education and women's issues as she begins her first solo trip overseas representing the president -- a coming out on the international stage for the first lady.

Mrs. Bush and her daughter Jenna, 20, arrived in the rainy twilight Monday evening in Paris, first stop on a 10-day tour that also includes the capitals of Hungary and the Czech Republic....

....Mrs. Bush's itinerary is on the light side, with some days kept free for private sightseeing.

I look forward to the forthcoming hair-splitting.

WASHINGTON – Laura Bush takes in Paris in the springtime this week – and Budapest and Prague, too.
It will be her first extended solo trip abroad as first lady and, in many ways, an inevitable new step on a long trail blazed by her predecessors.
Jacqueline Kennedy did it with a splash 40 years ago with high-profile visits to India and Pakistan. And Hillary Rodham Clinton regularly traveled the world, promoting education, health care and micro-loan programs designed largely to help poor women.
On this trip, Mrs. Bush will be more low-key, though no less ambitious in her own businesslike way.
She will discuss education and health care, two issues that she has long advocated. And, in an unusual venue, she will direct a 15-minute address to Afghanistan on the Radio Free Europe network.
"It's a good opportunity for her to use a global stage to talk about something that's important," said the first lady's press secretary, Noelia Rodriguez, summing up the 10-day trip. "She's very much looking forward to it."
Mrs. Bush's daughter, Jenna, a 20-year-old student at the University of Texas, also will make the trip, along with one of President Bush's top aides, counselor Karen Hughes.
Of course, you could call it a "working vacation". Not sure if Mic e is doing something like this while abroad.

You certainly don't have to take my word on it...

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs last week tried to dismiss questions about the first lady's trip by saying, "She is a private citizen and is the mother of a daughter on a private trip."
White House adviser David Axelrod said Monday on CNN television, "Yes, she is the first lady of the United States. She's also a mom. She wanted to take her daughter on a trip. They went with some friends of the family to celebrate another little girl's birthday. There aren't all that many places to go where you get privacy. Wherever you go, security is going to come, not because she asked for it, but because that is a nature of her — of her position in life."

Anyways CC, my question still holds: Do you think that Mic e shouldn't be allowed to take an international vacation while her husband is President? Or do you think she should be able to pay the Secret Service, etc etc expenses as well?

But certainly keep looking dude...As best as I remember you will also find a Laura Bush solo working trip to the Middle East to discuss breast cancer and womens rights. As I remember it pretty well pissed Saudi Arabia off...

And you will find that when she took PERSONAL TRIPS WITH FRIENDS she vacationed at various National Parks just like I said when you called me a liar.

    @ CC:

So then it's not the principle of the thing (vacations on the public dime), but instead the size of the bill that bothers you.

    Correck?

Dude the only thing I have said is that she is clearly out of touch and doesn't understand the perception that such a trip leaves.

How can you possibly argue that? I'm not the one writing all these stories in the papers and don't blame it on Fox either...The New York Times (HARDLY a conservative paper) led the charge...

Why should the taxpayers pay for breast cancer awareness in the Middle East?

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to stay at home and make a video?

If all were talking about is money....

    Ah, the hair-splitting commences.

She never went anywhere else with one friend? I find that difficult to believe.

In this thread, perhaps. In a very recent thread you suggested the FLOTUS was celebrating Islamic rule in Spain and inspiring her daughter with negritude (or the like.)

I have already said I don't like "working" junkets whether they are done by republicans or democrats. Congress does it all the time and it sucks.

Lots of tergiversation and backpedalling to be found there, but precious little clarity IMO.

Love how you've gone from race-baiting and islamophobia to touting the most uncontroversial pla udes, tho.

And I found it EXTREMELY interesting that the FIRST place she visited was the Alhambra Castle. It's not particularly significant architecturally but is historically significant as the seat of power when the Moors (non-white Muslims from North Africa) invaded Spain and almost conquered all of Europe in 711AD.

    Ain't THAT some ?

Neither one of us are Privy to Mic e Obamas inner motivation in making Alhambra the centerpiece of her vacation.

    I clearly stated my opinion/speculation

You clearly tried to refute my opinion/speculation and when that failed just played the bigot card.

We will never agree with each other on this one and all reasonable arguments from both sides have been covered.

    That horse is dead.

Again, you never stated why you found it so "EXTREMELY" interesting.

Surely you can talk about your own reasons for being capital-letter interested.
