It's pretty easy to imagine that many of Pilgrims were English urban types, rather than self-sufficient hard-ass country people.
Showing up in American wilderness, esp on the tail end of the mini-ice age, would have been and was brutal, and fatal.
So the Pilgrim leadership "distributed the wealth" (land) to individuals, rather the leadership managing the wealth for everybody else.
Is exactly the opposite of now, where the US "leadership" increasingly controls most of the wealth, taken from the citizens, while the follower-citizens stagnate and are impoverished.
