Inflation, maybe. And they were after Kidd, their priorities were elsewhere - even the Hedo-Mercer trade was a pretty damn good deal at the time.

But Danny was clearly a priority. I wish Jack had been back then, and that's not hindsight. Besides the obvious talent and physical gifts, it was the at ude and fearlessness I loved - the kind of stuff Rio brought in '99 - I appreciated the out of that kind of play and player given the softness of the Spurs supportin cast datin back to Dave's prime.

Just hate the woulda-coulda-shoulda. I'll always be a little bitter about Jack's first go-around.

Fantastic deal, considering the ridiculous monopoly money for borderline bench players like Landry Fields. Personally, I see Green making a HUGE leap next year with a full trainining camp. I believe he will continue to work his butt off because, in 3 years he will only be 28 or 29 and in his prime for the "really" big contract. Also, potentially he could be the second leading scorer in two years with the departure of Ginobili and Duncan. I can see him making the leap to 19-20pts a game in two-three years.

Well, he's no Nicolas Batum, that's for sure...but it was unrealistic of me to think we had a shot at a sign and trade to get him. And DG is a class guy, a solid shooter and a good defender...but he better not choke in next year's playoffs! Let's all be realistic about this, though: his ceiling isn't high but then again, his floor isn't that low. Good sign. Now let's get a big and get Bonner canned for good, please.
His per 36 stats aren't too different from Batum's actually. Batum gets to the line more and shoots more 2s, but Green is better at shooting 3s and assists (although the latter is an effect of the Spurs system).

Good deal for both sides. Green and Leonard as the starting wings for combined salaries that represent about 10% of the salary cap for the next two seasons.

The George Hill trade couldn't have worked out any better. As MaNu4Tres pointed out last season, the Hill trade not only led directly to Leonard, but it created the opportunity for Green. Now the Spurs have both players for about 75% of the price for Hill alone.
That's not quite "Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown and beans" level, but damn if the Spurs don't do steals in trades.

I dunno, he'll probably be behind Kawhi. After 3 years his contract is up, too.

    Pricey.
I like Green, but he will be pricey.
I wrote and maintain that anything above $3 M /year, max 3.5, is expensive for Green.

The argument that this or that player gets payed more is non argument.

Green was pulled out of nowhere, literally.
Watching Green and Hairston (just saying, or James White, yes James White) in December, there would be no question who could make it in the NBA. Not Green.
Green played in a fantastic, near perfect Spurs system, and his stats are better just because of this; everybody knows that.
The same applies for Blair, in fact, and indeed, Spurs got no first rounder for a very cheap contract of a guy that started 64 games, despite desperately shopping him.
I doubt many teams would throw a lot of money to Green.

The real argument, here, would be: how many Greens are out there, capable to play for a near perfect system?

Had a feeling he was staying after his tweet on July 4th..

    Danny Green ‏@DGreen_14
When you ask for more when som1 is already giving, shows unappreciation...be happy with what you got/are getting
I'm glad the guy is humble and all, but this is naive. It may not apply to Danny in this case, but boy do players get pimped out so hard in so many other ways... Im of the opinion that $29m/4yrs is a STEAL for Jeremy Lin if you are the NEW YORK Knicks.

About his choking in WCF... I think we all would rather take a ring, if it meant Green would leave. But we got no ring, so it's actually better for us that Danny wasn't playing above average in WCF. If he did, there is no way we could have got him for 12/3, especially not in those crazy times at the market, where Fields is getting 20M, Asik 25 etc.

I'm happy we kept him, I believe he will come back even better.

Can I ask why the Spurs offer good contracts?

Bonner IS overpaid for a playoff choker but is still on a small contract.

Bonner would be overpaid if he made the veteran's minimum.

Jack got offered 3, iirc. 3-year, 9 million. Given Jack's stature in the league and market at the time, good chance that million-dollar difference would've been enough - still bitter, admittedly.
Well, it was the best offer made to Jack that offseason - he elected for a short term deal instead to raise his profile, and that worked.

But, whether it's Jack, or Green, or Parker, or Manu - the Spurs aren't going to bid against themselves. That is pretty much a staple of the organization.

This is okay as long as Manu is on the team. Once Manu retires, Green cannot carry the position as a normal starter and should be traded at that time to acquire an upgrade.

That's contingent on Green developing moves off the dribble. Manu is a once every generation player, so replacing him is tough work, to put it simply.

    Good find.

That means the contract could start (or end) as low as $3.5M.

So the Spurs actually re-signed Green for Daequan Cook money? Pretty amazing, tbh.
