It's meaningless because it doesn't tell me anything about the music others than the manner in which it was performed and produced. I feel the same way about "alternative". It doesn't mean anything. For the most part, unless you are clever and concise and specific to each individual artist, categorizing music with generalities is pointless.

Both of you are right. Someone says 'indie' and I'm thinking singer-songwriter area. Getting more specific and then categorizing becomes pointless.

There are always certain expectations associated with any genre, but indie rock and alternative might just as well be called rock for as much as it tells me about the actual music.
