Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner - 2007
The definitive three-and-a-half hour do entary about the troubled creation and enduring legacy of the science fiction classic "Blade Runner," culled from 80 interviews and hours of never-before-seen outtakes and lost footage.
This probably appeals most to film & sci-fi buffs, but I reckon it's also one of the best soup-to-nuts films about film making that I've seen. All the behind the scene stuff of film making is presented, from the business/finance side of things, the creative struggles and discoveries, the workings of a film set and crew dynamics, distribution, etc - it's all there.
It's also interesting to see how pre-digitial special effects were worked out and put together.
Highly recommended
Winged Planet is kind of awesome.
I recently watched Jiro Dreams of Sushi and agree with those who have already suggested it.
One that I haven't seen mentioned in here yet is Being Elmo. Not having any particular fondness for (and/or interest in) Elmo, Sesame Street, or puppeteering, I was somewhat surprised at just how much I liked this one. As with Jiro, there's something nice about watching the story of someone who works really hard at, and becomes successful in, the thing they love doing.
Thanks for providing these, mate. Watched the first. Very good so far
Hitler's GI Death Camp
The Gospel of Judas
Being Elmo was great.
The Bob Marley one they have on Netflix was excellent if you haven't seen it--very good detailed story about his life and how his sudden death was the end of the reggae heyday....nice soundtrack and vivid imagery.
Religulous is still one of my favorites.
agreed, great film
Better than World at War? It's about a 35 part series and the episodes on the Nazis taking power, the Battle of Stalingrad, and the taking of Iwo Jima are incredible. Also a couple of episodes with interviews with Traudl Junge, whose story was told again in Downfall. The actual footage they had from Iwo Jima was crazy.
Explains a lot.
Both are pretty good tbh. I'm more of a fan of the WW1 do entaries; unfortunately there haven't been many made recently as WW2 gets all the attention.
Recommendations for The Great War? PBS's The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century is awesome (think I mentioned that one earlier in the thread), but I don't really know any others.
Anyone seen The Unknown War? It looks interesting since it's the only one I have heard of that covers WWII from the Soviet's point of view. LOL it being pulled from TV when the west got pissed at them for invading Afghanistan.
There's one called The First World War that's available on youtube; bout 10 parts at 50 or so minutes a piece...it's pretty good. I've seen parts of random BBC ones like WWI in Colour that sometimes comes on the History Channel. I know there are others, just gotta find a list of them.
Wish one of the WWI docs would do a more concentrated and detailed battle of the Isonzos
Wish somedody would do a three part in depth....The Black Athlete in America. Taking us back to the first great black athletes in America, boxers and jockeys.
did you know they found an entirely new species of lice in his dreds?
