Modern times, folks. Several pioneer states got the marriage equality bandwagon rolling last night, and a couple states decided to decisively embrace private recreational use of marijuana. Meanwhile, back at the R brain trust they are still trying to figure out how to impose Leviticus as a legal code.

Looky here. I will give you the secrets to the 21st century American electorate. Adapt or perish.

1. Take science and cutting edge research very seriously. "Success" as a party and a people depends on the nimble use of intelligence, something that the D's currently exhibit and the R's do not. Being able to reach the electorate hinges on technological proficiency, which at its core presupposes a very high degree of literacy and education . Knowledge is Good. Try looking like you know something.

2. Stop trying to legislate morality. Gay marriage, abortion, and other hot button social issues can be approached from a conservative personal liberty stance that attracts voters. Personal choice is OK. Pursuit of happiness and all that other stuff in the rule book. The R's are a bunch of national nags and buzzkills right now.

3. The social safety net is vital. Figure out how to manage it efficiently and fairly.

4. Be cool. Old, white and uptight still looks as bad today as it did 40 years ago.

5. Celebrate diversity and learn Spanish because you're gonna need it.

^ Number 5 is the big one. Lots of those aging white guys would have crossover appeal if they knew Spanish and could reach out to Spanish speaking people directly, rather than relying on conservative "brown" people to do it for them.

I would not say I am in a better situation - about the same. Working for the same company (in 2007/2008 finished my MBA), just at a higher level since being promoted a couple times. Trying to buy a home now kind of sucks tbh...even with great credit, extremely minor debt (no car payment, no credit card debt, only debt is the remaining portion of my Master's degree since my undergrad is paid off) and a solid debt to equity ratio it's tough.

I would loosely call it a background tbh . Never worked in the financial sector (well, that's not entirely true), but Finance was my minor (our MBA program allowed you to do a major/minor type deal as you could in undergrad). I am not what you could call a "finance" guy, but I definitely took a few high level classes and got through them. Not pursuing my CFA if you catch my drift. I enjoy marketing and economics and would take as my electives the economic/finance classes where I could.

Tbh a combo of marketing/finance works really well from what I've seen though. A girl I know double majored in both, graduated last year and she got an offer from Goldman Sachs.

It does work well. IMO, much like in anything in life, people tend to lean too far one way or the other. Marketing being more of a "softer science" with Finance being more analytical, I wanted to have a good, balanced blend of analytics plus creative.

The GOP has to become soft(well they already are) and appear to be soft on immigration to have a shot in 2016. They also have to lighten the up on abortion and gay marriage. They could at least just say that those issues are better handled at the state level or local level and keep the federal government out of those issues. Offer some free that people actually want too. Get some celebrities that people like or bribe some of the "cool" celebrities to join red team.
