He gave Diaw immediate time because of that, so he very well could do the same with Baynes. If the Spurs sign him, he'll probably play a good deal of minutes. Even though he's worth signing as insurance, I think Pop will do what he can to keep Blair and Bonner out of the rotation.

And he would only need to do 2 things: rebound and easy buckets. I mentioned earlier, if he even has a little daylight, he can dunk.

    and this

im seriously into this as an idea, Baynes is the type of guy on D people think twice about coming into the paint on, and on offense he just crashes holes, would seriously add to this team.

Diaw received immediate time because he was a longtime NBA veteran who knew the league and had logged huge minutes. Big difference from Baynes. On top of that Diaw had years of experience playing with Parker for France, and playing with Jackson in Charlotte.

Hey, I hope I'm wrong, I'm sick of Blair and Bonner. But I've seen how these guys operate long enough to have every confidence that Baynes won't be signed.

Very possible. Indeed very probable. But Pop is doing things this year that he really doesn't do normally (benching Bonner, playing a rookie point, starting a non-stretch four next to Duncan). He seems to really think Blair and Bonner are inadequate bigs. I think the Spurs are looking to make a move, and out of the possible ones out there, this seems like a decent one from many angles.

    We can hope, right?

The way I see it is this,

We are not adverse to looking overseas for players.
This one happens to have a link to us that almost no other big outside of the NBA has in Brett Brown, and a basic knowledge of our system.

These are 2 very good reasons to suspect it could happen

As we are we are an aristocrat in a league that consists of the haves and have nots. That being so, as we are, we are not a genuine championship threat even with KL and Staxjack back. To contend we need just one big defensive banger. This guy would give us that chance.

Looks like Baynes is staying in Ljubljana, as GM Zupančič said: Baynes is too important player for Olimpija at the moment, if they let him go, their goals would be harder to accomplish. At the end he says: "In case of an offer, which would provide good ending for the team, we could act differently in the future."

Damn since Blair is doing nothing for this team we really need to find someone to give us a second rounder for him and I would have loved to get this guy. Every time I see a spur dunk I get all misty eyed since our players hardly do it. Add to that it is a big man that can dunk and that is worth getting him just for that.

    Yep would have been perfect...

Only explanation I can think of is the FO thinks it's as important to unload some players (chemistry issues waiting to happen) as it is to get another big so they'd rather made a trade...

Holy . The Spurs actually did it.

    http://www.talkbasket.net/7503-san-a...on-baynes.html

In a stunning move, the San Antonio Spurs have signed Olimpija Ljublijana's sensation center Aaron Baynes to a four years deal.
    ...
As for Baynes, who had a terrific Euroleague campaign with Olimpija, he will sign a four-years deal (2+2) and will depart to the US by tomorrow, adding another international component to the Spurs engine.

Yup. Twitter blowing up with it now. Can't believe the Spurs actually signed a player from the think tank.

I was wrong about the Spurs signing him.

I hope I'm also wrong about how the Pop wouldn't play him, because as stated before, I'm sick of Blair and Bonner.

Let's see if I can go two for two on being wrong.

Blair will be traded sooner than later. This move basically drives the nails into his coffin.

And he will play. I don't think the Spurs are going to drop 400k on a buyout if they aren't high on him.

Not to mention a multi-year deal structured like a rookie contract (2+2 years).
