What a thread. Kobe can't take a pay cut to give his team more cap space after he signs a contract. Next year he is not part of the cap space so how's he going to take a cut to free up space?
Actually, yes, the new CBA allows players to do that (with limits):
A new "renegotiation and extension" provision allows an existing contract to be renegotiated so the player is paid a smaller amount over a longer period, but the player's salary cannot decrease by more than 40 percent. Renegotiations previously could only increase a player's salary.
Deferring money over time is not what we are talking about. We are talking about Kobe getting paid less money so his team has cap space.
Kobe Bryant has given up on the 6th ring if he is unwilling to take a cut, but I take his word with a grain of salt. If he went by everything he said, he would be a Bull and Shaq would have remained in LA longer.

Clearly the ranter never saw Kobe's interview. What Kobe SAID - laughingly - was from a negotiating standpoint, you NEVER start out saying that you're willing to give up money. You start at the max and work down. Also, (per Kobe) the Player's Association would KILL him if he said publicly he was willing to take a huge paycut because of the effect on other players' negotiations.

There are no negotiations, Kobe will be given a blank check. Whatever his salary is, it will be the number he chose.
