Maybe I didn't up too bad lol
AMD claims the R9 5900X is marginally faster in single core vs a 10900k, though they lie a lot in these presentations, and it's 12C/24T instead of 10C/20T like the 10900k. But honestly I think anything more than 8C/16T isn't a big deal since the next gen consoles use 8C/16T Ryzen. Hence the reason I was recommending the i7-10700k.

Since AMD wants $300 for a 6C/12T R5 5600X then I'm out. If I want budget I get almost as good of performance with the exact same level of future proofing from the 6C/12T i5-10400f for $180. But if I was going to spend $300 on an R5 5600X it would be stupid not to just spend the extra $80 and get a much better and more future-proof 8C/16T i7-10700k instead.

Is it true that the large majority of "gains" seen by some of these moves are only apparent in benchmarks, not in actual applications?

For gaming kind of depends what your target is and how much headroom you have above it. If I can I generally play games with settings to try to target a locked 60 fps with vsync on which looks great when you're at 60 fps but if you start dipping much below it gets stuttery as . So in some cpu bound games like Fallout 4 or GTA V I noticed a pretty significant difference in smoothness just from upgrading my RAM from DDR3-1600 to DDR3-2400 a few years ago. So in my case I would have definitely noticed the difference if say I upgraded my Xeon E3-1231v3 to an i7-4790k even though the 4790k isn't all that much more powerful than the E3-1231v3 (virtually the same cpu except 4790k is clocked at 4.2 GHz vs 3.6 GHz on E3-1231v3 when all cores are in use). Now if you went and spent on a GSync monitor or even FreeSync nowadays that wouldn't really apply to you since the monitor matches the refresh rate to the framerate your cpu + gpu is able to render within whatever bounds the monitor is rated at (say 40 fps to 144 fps) and it would probably be hard to tell the difference between say a perfectly synced 115 fps vs a perfectly synced 122 fps.

Went up $100 vs the R5 3600. Can't believe Intel is going to end up the bang for your buck performance king.

Chip looks like it's going to be like 15-20% faster than the $180 6c/12t i5-10400f in gaming for $300.
at the start of the year i bought a used 3600x + msi b450 gaming max pro for 300 aud on fb marketplace, cause the chimp seller bought a used TR 3950 cpu, so i got a bargain...but boTH those parts has been sitting in the cupboard since that date till now, didnt buy rest of the other parts due to stupid price with ram and gpu mining bs...

The new system is a beast. I put a 2tb 970 NVMe as the storage drive. Of course the same day this came in my mobo for my other system arrived, so I got it running too. Now I have a spare pretty fast system.

amds leaked 6800xt benchmark hahahaha nvidia will rush out its ti/super cards to respond

im waiting for the 6900xt benchmarks...

what i find interesting between the 6900xt 6800xt 6700xt is just 8CU difference between each card, mem size is the same 16gb ddr6, memory size ranges is different for each card....but the low card and bios hack to run like the top card? just like what happen with the 5700 to run like a 5700xt

Nvidia doesn't have to do if those benchmarks are true. 3080 kicks the out of 6800XT at raytracing native res and the gap will be much much bigger once you factor in Nvidia's outstanding DLSS 2.0 upscaling. Who is going to really care if 6800XT can solidly beat 3800 just in older games?

What the happened to AMD's price to performance advantage? 6800 is supposed to go head to head with the 3070 but costs 79.00 more?

Three reasons I can come up with:

    1. They claim the cheaper 6800 is faster than 3080 (except cherrypicked for raster only it looks like)
    2. You're not going to find 3070 for $500 anyways, so might as well up the price
    3. They're not going to produce a lot of them since their production is likely going to be tied up mainly in PS5 and XBox Series X/S for a while.

Reason 3 is probably why their new cpus got big price bumps too, though they're likely to just be flat out better than Intel too with how much Intel has struggled the last 4 years. I wouldn't touch their gpus though because they're not as good at RT as Ampere most likely (or they would have said so) and they have nothing at all close to DLSS-2.0, which is showing itself to be nearly as good as native resolution.

If the MSRP from Nvidia is 500.00 wouldn't you be able to buy from them directly at that cost?

Could be pretty limited though. Supposedly the 3080 was only put out at $699 as a loss leader and Nvidia's cooling shroud cost $150, so could be a similar situation with 3070. Supposedly we're not likely to see 3080 Founders Editions ever come back on the market again in large quan ies.

If you can't snag the Founder's Edition I probably wouldn't be too eager to buy the lowest end cooler considering this isn't a typical 70 series release designed for low power consumption. 3070 has a similar power usage to the RX 5700 XT, so cooler really could matter with this card. Not saying I'd spend say $570 to get a Strix with a heavy factory overclock or anything, but I'd be leery of the $510 budget cooler cards if you can't snag a Founders Edition. I bet the decent third party will start around $530.

+79 is for that extra memory gb, 16gb vs 10gb is a no brainer if u need it

as for nvidia cooler costing them 150$ to make...they only ship the chip to the 3rd party partners, so i dunno how those partners can justify their prices over vanilla cards if their cooler isnt +150$ to make, slap a few rgb on and they charge u an extra 50 out of nowhere cause they can

I could do 530.00. That's not too far above my budget

Newegg had several manufacturers with the 3 fan cooling solutions from 499.00 to 530.00 so that's promising. Just need to catch it when they restock. Amazon doesn't even have anything listed yet.

ing Asus set a $653 MSRP for the 3070 Strix OC Edition. What a joke.
