if there is no will, there is a very standard procedure for how assets are divided, and its usually not really subject to argument. the only disputes come when there is a separated couple, and there are different ways of dividing community and separate propertyYesterday I received a very nice check for my share of my grandparents estate, the only thing is....my grandparents passed away 20 YEARS AGO! There were no family fights over the estate (minus one glitch about the sale of their house that happened after one of their heirs--my mom--passed away before it was complete). I just took another look at 2120's thread about the mess his family is in over their parents estate and damn, it's hard to believe it could drag on for over 20 years! All of us with a job and a little savings, no matter what age, really should start directing what will happen with our assets before someone else does it for us. Don't let the bullies in the family, or in my family's case, the adorable drunk uncle, dictate what you worked so hard for!
Now for my question----best ways I can avoid paying taxes on it?

I don't flip, I have 2 rentals in Killeen and want more. I want the whole block! I've had really good luck there renting exclusively to military folks.
Nice, easy money. Just sucks when you rent to some piece of trash that destroys everything.
It's happened to my neighbor! He rented to strippers. But I just rent to military so that's not likely to happen. One house has had the same single officer renting for 5 years now.

Oddly enough my wife and I do the same thing, we rent our houses to the military, or to East Indians, but in San Antonio.

I have always been totally upfront with the fact that I never take anything seriously on here anymore, and not since SBM and I had our super intense vitriolic fights upstairs about Pop, and again down here.
Plus I never START the insults or attacks, nor do I hold grudges, and I always try to give the benefit of the doubt, and respect where respect is due regardless of whether we agree or not.
Ask Rob, he will verify this.
He and I do not see eye to eye on a lot of issues, but we always give each other respect.
And the same goes now with SBM, but for sure it wasn't always this way.
Both are good people if treated right, and I think this goes for the vast majority.
One of these days he's gonna snap and murder everyone on the block.
