When are we going to stop killing innocent people?

    By Radley BalkoJune 10
Texas death row inmate Alfred Dewayne Brown was released from prison Monday. He spent 10 years on death row. A huge portion of the credit for his release goes to Houston Chronicle columnist Lisa Falkenberg, who won a Pulitzer for her coverage of the case.

Brown had an alibi for the crime for which he was convicted — an armed robbery that resulted in the death of a police officer. Brown said he was staying at his girlfriend’s apartment at the time of the robbery. But after a browbeating from a Houston cop who inexplicably served as foreman on the grand jury that indicted Brown, the woman changed her testimony. Grand jury transcripts would later show that during her testimony, the cop/foreman threatened to indict Brown’s girlfriend for perjury and threatened to take away her children. She was eventually jailed for seven weeks, then released when she changed her testimony to contradict Brown’s alibi. Without his girlfriend’s testimony, Brown was convicted and sentenced to death.

Seven years later, Brown’s attorneys discovered phone records confirming that Brown had called his girlfriend at her job from her apartment around the time of the murder. Not only were those records never given to Brown’s defense attorneys, the records were found in the garage of a Houston homicide detective.

As I reported here at The Watch last summer, leaked grand jury do ents later showed that the same cop who threatened Brown’s girlfriend had served on at least nine other grand juries. This was thanks to a grand jury selection system known as the “key man” system, which critics say allows judges and prosecutors to stack grand juries with people most likely to do the state’s bidding. The Texas legislature has since started to reform the key man system.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Brown is the 12th death row exoneration since 2013, and the fourth death row inmate exonerated so far this year.

An innocent man spent 10 years in prison. Why are the real culprits, the cops, the DA, the judges not reprimanded? Especially the DA. They should have to face consequences for malevolent behavior. Yet they do their "job" and when they up there are no repercussions. Its ing abominable.

I agree. Everyone involved in the frame and coverup should be convicted and get 10 years in TDC.

People destroy other people's lives. Yet there are no consequences.

This man spent 10 YEARS in prison for something he didn't do. He was absconded. And the people who put him there walk free?

What kind of country is this we're living in?

Mistakes happen, but it doesn't mean we should do away with the death sentence. I see some instances no worse than unintentional deaths that happen regularly from car accidents, and other things. Life is what it is. happens.
    This guy scares me

This guy wasn't released on some technicality, even the prosecutors ended up saying he was innocent.

True, but I'm glad for Alfred Brown that he at least gets the money. This sort of judicial vindication is rare in Texas, an amazing victory. Mr. Brown can't get any of the time back, but it will smooth his path.

It's hard to figure out what it takes to become such a piece of that you knowingly put an innocent man on death row because that's what it takes to win at your job.

All you have to do is pander to a bloody-minded public that seeks judicial vengeance at any cost and get elected DA. Easy peasy.

Nothing more sickening than watching docs about the subject and seeing the defeated DAs go on their raves about how they were originally right and it's a travesty the innocent man is set free, no matter how much evidence is brought to light and how obvious it is the man is innocent.

I don't think I've ever see a crime doc where the DA ever admits being wrong, and it's shocking when most of these instances the DA is retired or moved on so there's no reputation at stake to lose.

American civilization is not pro-life. It's violent, hate-driven hole.

Perdue Pharma/Sackler family killed 450K, so far, for profit, hand slap

Trash killed 350K, so far, for personal politics, no penalty.

The American imperial GWOT has killed and displaced Ms of non-combatants, unquestioned, unstoppable.

About prisons, authorities are struggling where in the vaccine queue are prisoners, whose infection rate is 4x the general public.

My guess is a majority of Americans, even Christ-loving evangelicals, would say vengefully

" prisoners, esp the non-white ones. They're in prison, ins utional, governmental racism, because whitey wants them there"
