I had a late appointment, so I had to DVR the game. I just got done watching it. I'm writing this up prior to skimming this thread, because I want my impressions uncolored. I'm going to watch it again later because I have some questions about how the game was managed, but for now, here we go. Let me know if you see any errors, and I'll fix them with edits.
I'll go in order of grade, high to low.
One pre-grade note: The officiating in this game was laughably bad. I'd go into detail, but they almost got every call in this game wrong. It was seriously about as bad as I've ever seen.
Dairis Bertans A
I want this kid on the team now. I don't need to see any more. He's a really good three point shooter, he's a smart passer, he's an incredible defender. He drew no fewer than four legitimate charges in this game, and perhaps a fifth in the second half, which the officials managed to turn into the first delayed-whistle blocking foul I've ever seen in a basketball game. The offense moved well while he was on the floor, and the play to seal the game was absolutely brilliant. He looked over his right shoulder, saw Jean-Charles running toward the front of the rim and threw a no-look pass over his left shoulder. He's really going to have to be bad for the rest of summer league to make me stop liking what he does.
Livio Jean-Charles A-
This kid is 21, folks. He's not super polished on offense, but he has a good jump stroke and didn't shrink from taking open shots even when they weren't falling. I though he played really good defense, rebounded well, was in the right place a lot, he has very good hands, has equally good feet, and didn't make any really major mistakes. Even if his offense doesn't come around, he looked to be capable of doing everything the Spurs will need from a big, because with the firepower they're going to have, I could care less if he ever gets a shot. I think he's going to get a camp invite pretty much no matter what happens from here out. Even wearing Ian Mahinmi's jersey number couldn't slow him down.
Cady Lalanne A-
He looks far better than I expected. His jumper is quite good, he's smart on both ends of the floor, he rebounds well, has good hands, and his defense is, well, tenacious. He was overmatched by what looks like a legitimate NBA center in Okafor, and was, for some reason, put on an island while the Sixers isolated him, but he didn't put his head down, didn't complain about the questionable calls that went against him, he just took the challenge and did the best he could. I thought both Jean-Charles and Nastic were much better against Okafor simply because they had more size. Why the Spurs allowed Lalanne to continue to check a guy who was beating him is a mystery. He's a good strong rebounder, and he needs to learn when to try to go back up after an offensive board and when to throw it back out now that he's playing with pros. Surprised at the upside. BTW, why is this guy 23 and only played one year in college? (yes I can look it up but I'm lazy)
Casper Ware B
If it weren't for Bertans, who looks to me like he could play either guard spot in a backup role, I'd probably be more forgiving of Ware just because of team need. I'm not sure if I've ever seen him play before, but he's a better point guard than many of the guys the Spurs have had in past summer leagues. He's a good shooter (though he calls his own number a bit too much), he's a good passer when he's paying attention, he's a good dribbler when he's paying attention, and he's not a liability on defense. Not the best decision maker I've ever seen, but he's got some positives. If forced to make a conclusion after only one game, I'd say it's conceivable that he could work his way onto an NBA team.
Everyone else who played not named Kyle Anderson I
You guys were okay. Thanks for the hard work. Grade I for Incomplete. We'll wait a game or two to give more information.
Everyone who didn't play
Good news, everyone! You weren't the worst players on the team tonight.
Kyle Anderson can you bold a vomit emoticon?
I came into this game expecting to grade everyone who doesn't currently occupy a roster spot a little more forgivingly, and I was excited to see Anderson play after this offseason. Turns out I didn't need to do either. Remember that this comes from a guy who really liked KA last year, and has defended his game quite a bit: Kyle Anderson was awful tonight. He didn't look like a guy capable of contributing to an NBA team in any way. He hit a nice patented-Slowmo layup on the first play of the game, and then he was awful. His one-on-one moves are bad, when passing he looked like a guy who didn't want to be noticed, and his shooting was terrible. When he was given the Manu role at the end of the first quarter, he waved off the screener for some reason, waited too long to get the offense going, dribbled into a double team, and had to make a near-miraculous behind-the-back dribble just to get a pass off before the clock ran out. In addition, he passed up a wide open three, he nearly airballed a technical free throw, he missed several rotations, and last but not least, he ing turned his back and ran away with his arms in the air when someone came into the paint at him. He had a couple of moments where he contributed, which is to say he wasn't completely awful, but this is the guy the Spurs were supposed to be showcasing. I have a hard time not outright hating the guy after this game. It was a performance to make me wonder if he's capable of being an NBA player. I hope a second watch will make me less disgusted than I am right now.
Coaching
I'm going to need to go back and see what the happened in the third quarter, because the Spurs' offense was . They didn't seem to generate nearly the same looks as they did in both the first half and the fourth quarter. Allowing Lalanne to check Okafor several times in a row made very little sense, and the wholesale subs ution of everyone on the floor five minutes into the game was puzzling, as Bertans was rolling and Okafor was not. At least the right people seemed to be on the floor at the end.
