Sure can. And will. They need to keep Cuban reasonably happy about this. Teams have been compensated for this sort of thing before.
If there's no rule against it, the league can't do anything other than make a rule going forward. Clippers will not be punished by the league. Other teams may punish by not dealing with them, but the league can't do anything.

I will root for any team playing clippers

I have always liked CP & Griffin, as well as Doc. But after this, I truly lost all my respect for them. This is just not right.

Also - no class at all. It's ok (even if bad business) to change your mind. It's not ok to publicly shame a franchise that legitimately wanted you and that you are screwing over.

It may be more than that. Jordan may get a chunk chewed out of his ass... and out of this contract. There's a legal principle known as "promissory estoppel", and it has some teeth.

If you tell a guy that he's got a job, and he quits his old job, sells his house, and moves all his to another city - and then you tell him you changed your mind? Promissory estoppel. You made a promise that he relied on, acted on, and it cost him a bunch of money. He can't force you to give him the job, but he may be able to force you to pay for the damages he sustained.

I don't know if they have special provisions for sports contracts, but I bet Cuban's lawyers are looking at it already. The damage to Cuban and the Mavs would probably put a pretty big dent in Jordan's salary. Cuban doesn't need the money, but I'd love to see a court make an example out of that monkey-ass Jordan.

never liked CP or Griffin - lack of integrity/character. This scenario proves my theory.

I wasn't speaking to the merits of the suit. Just to haters generic comment. A lawsuit has to basically be complete bull and you cant justify it or back up your claim at all. This probably passes muster. My understanding of the moratorium rules is Cuban would have no case. Frivolous? No. Winnable? No.

Who's going to deliver the hard foul? Dirk, Chandler or Matthews? Seriously, I hate the Mavericks - but this is pretty bad.
Cuban's got enough money to bring a guy out of retirement for one game to do the job. How about Shaq-a-Jordan?

Again, this won't work. No lawsuit will be filed. Jordan had no legal obligation to sign with Mavs and Mavs knew it.

    Ken Berger @KBergCBS
The Mavs have conceded in their quest for DeAndre Jordan, league source tells @CBSSports. Moving on and "hitting reset button," source says.

Pretty Cuban done the right move. Jordan will no longer be welcomed in Dallas with open arms by fans for what happened, anyway.
I'd watch when these two teams first meet this season in Dallas and see the fans' reaction..

This is the definition of doing someone dirty. Mavs had a contingent of Roy Hibbert if things fell through. Hibs now in LAL and Dre' back in LAC. Dallas isn't making the PS now.
