Yeah, I was lowkey waiting for the US to win. .
People are overreacting on this. USA has the bulls eye. Everyone knew that while talented, USA was beatable with a bunch of young players without international experience. Plus, the expectation is for the USA to win every game. So USA had all the pressure. Teams can play loose against them because they aren't "supposed to win."
I still have respect for Pop being willing to coach these guys. That France game could have gone either way. Just as likely that if USA beats France, they beat everyone else.
Kudos to France. They don't have to win a 7 game series. Just one game. And they pulled it out against a talented, but inexperienced team. It's still a nice win for France, but let's not act like any team in this tournament would have beaten a Team USA with the very top American NBA talent. And let's not pretend that somehow Pop can't coach because he collects a couple of promising players and has a few weeks to teach them to play together and compete against teams that have been there for years. Pop could have waited until the Olympics to coach the superstars, but he went to China with what amounts to US's C team and he qualified. Let's see how excited Argentina is to play US when the side has Curry, Durrant, Thompson, Lebron, Kawhi, etc.
CoachK taking all that time away from PoP when Star NBA players wanted to play
This is on Pop period. Friggin Scola wastes Team USA
Fans don’t want their players to play for the national team because they are afraid they’ll get hurt but then complain when superstars don’t show up to play for team USA. It is kind of hypocrite. Often, those are the same fans who sh!t on players who kneel during the anthem calling them unpatriotic.
There's no spinning this one. Mostly because it wasn't just this occurrence, same happened when it was Larry Brown and Poop back in '04. Shaq, Garnett, Kobe, etc, none of those guys wanted to play.
Is it time to get some flour, mixins, water etc and tea ready?
it's always tea time... J_Paco will bring the lattice pie
Hmmn wonder if invitations being sent via SpursTalk can be resumed?
It's been quite a while now since butthurt Mod put a stop to posting party info. Maybe he / she / they are no longer here?
Last Spurs-Nuggets, too.
It seems like Pop lost his fire.
10 years ago I wouldn't imagine Pop coaching this bad in the last plays. Since 2011 vs Memphis I think that Pop isn't the same coach.
everybody was saying that if there is one year to pull a win in a WC against USA this is the one.. Walker ing sucks, the roster is young and NBA B/C talent, they are not used to fiba rules.. even Argies would have preferred play USA rather than France next round. Truth must be told, France is absolutely not assured to win this tournament... France just beat a prentender.. would not be suprised to see them lose against Argentina tbh.. even tho Rudy is going to be a pain to handle for them.
Different cir stances- 2004 was supposed to redeem the 2002 team but with the us war on terror and the games proximity to middle East a lot of guys that played the 03 americup sat out citing security concerns
Now the us was coming off a prolonged run of dominance and with next Olympics less than a year away they figured the c team could cut it
Obviously the us is the main power in this sport and that's why it's a big deal to beat them. I disagree however that just throwing the best players together is enough. Time and Time again in basketball and other sports you see that formula fail for lack of chemistry, roles, defense etc.
Poop fanbois: "This is Trump's fault, it has nothing to do with Popovich *slurps*"
I forgot about that, didn't the players stay on a boat because of security concerns.
I don't think the USA intentionally sent the "C Team." I think all Team A and Team B players all turned down the invite. So they were stuck with Team C.
USA can get away with sending the superstars and still winning the whole thing. Every country now tends to have NBA players, and some have superstars. It's just that Team USA has more superstars (thought that is changing too). I still think when Team USA has a bunch of superstars in the Olympics, they'll win all their games per usual. Chemistry matters when you are a team trying to beat the superstars. If those superstar teams had chemistry, they would be unbeatable. TBH, Team USA probably has all the chemistry they need if they send last year's version of the GSW starting line up. KD, Curry, Thompson, and Green will get you there. Just throw in any number of small forwards...Kawhi, Paul George, Lebron, and they will be good enough to take everyone out.
Eh, who do you think felt more pressure to win that 4th quarter, France or USA? You think pressure of embarrassment of losing wasn't on the minds of those Team USA players when they were missing all those shots in the 4th? France had nothing to lose. I don't think that Pop's fault. Coach K would have likely lost the game today too with this same roster.
Better this is happening now than the Olympics. Hopefully it galvanizes both the coaches and the players who have passed on the invites to come back.
First, this definitely tarnishes Pop's legacy, IMO. You can't be a part of the two biggest USA basketball failures and it not. That's simply the bottom line.
That being said, there's a lot of things about this that suck. First, the format. One and done tournaments, like the NCAA tournament, have really high chance of the best team talent wise failing. The main problem is that even with a large talent advantage, its hard to be sure to win every single game. Even if you've got a 4:1 edge over a team because of a large talent advantage, that still means you lose 20% of the time. If you line that up over multiple games, the chances you lose are almost certain. In some of these games, the US certainly wasn't even a 4:1 favorite.
Second, the rest of the world is so much better. This is the first tournament where the US didn't have the best player. In fact, the gulf between Kemba and Giannis was ing huge. The second best player was arguably Jokic.
Third, the rest of the world plays as a team much more than this unit ever managed to. They've been practicing for so long, and at best this unit never came together very well. Maybe this is a knock on Pop's coaching style. I don't know, but what I do know is that this team never looked as cohesive as other teams that have played together much longer. I don't know how USA basketball can fix this.
I'm sure all the trolls will use this failure to troll Pop and that sucks.
Agree with all of your post except this part. Other countries also have players that decline to play, players that get injured, coaches who want new challenges, etc etc etc. If anything the us has huge advantages, between economic resources and depth of the player pool. If there's isn't continuity in the us program that's the us' fault, it's not like other countries have all their players locked up in cryogenic machines where they are always available to train and be programmed to play with teamwork because their socialist government's force them to. If there is continuity and teammwork in certain NT it's because they built it with work and commitment.
Lol. Why did all the NBA stars show up for last year's training camp? THE MAJOR REASON why stars did not go this year was because of the insane schedule right before training camp, PERIOD. LOL is that why players in the NBA vote Pop as the coach they would most like to play for? Are you reading what you are trying to say right now? Sure the resume doesn't look clean but you are coming to some awful conclusions and using terrible reasoning.
Such a bad take. Shaq only played in 1 olympics, ‘96 & was getting traded to the Heat. Kobe was going to trail for rape that Summer. Garnett already got his Gold and was getting married.
The big takeaway is this wasn’t the Olympics.
Trump should call him out. Losing to France and Australia, narrowly winning some others. Might actually put some fire in the belly again.
The USA coaching staff and players should get tons of praise, everyone knew it was a no win situation with this roster, if they had won people would be saying internationals team suck that’s why and if they lose like they did it’s everybody’s fault and humiliating etc... these guys at least had the balls to go out and compete.
