Good stuff, makes you really feel for pop. The hall of fame detail is interesting, was this reported before? That pop is delaying hall of fame candidacy until retirement?

Those comments to Yahoo Sports – along with other public statements – moved Popovich to write a letter to Colangelo that was carbon copied to several top officials in the league office, league sources told Yahoo Sports. In the letter, Popovich essentially told Colangelo: Don't you dare suggest that I had anything but a deep desire to be the USA's national coach. Mostly, Pop told him: Just stop talking about me.
Now that's a letter I'd be fascinated to read.

Pop will have to depend on players like Anthony Davis, Leonard, Irving, Wall, Cousins, Oladipo, Drummond, Monroe, Tobias Harris, MCW, Lillard, Green, Hayward, Beal, and one or two 30+ yr old veterans that might come back. Not exactly a stacked pipeline. Pop definitely will have his work cut out for him. Maybe some of these players can dramatically improve in the next five years.
    MCW.

    Potential starting line-up:
    Cousins
    Davis
    Kawhi
    Butler
    Wall

    Bench:
    Drummond
    Towns
    George/Hayward
    Beal
    Kyrie/Lillard

those digs at Coach k were delicious..dude pathetically acted like the program is his own by birthright..good to learn that Pop gets along well with Silver, whose voice apparently played a role in this..

I'm curious who his assistants will be, as if assume someone like Donovan, Kerr, or Stevens is the future longterm solution. Maybe room for Gentry? I know Gentry was an assistant under Pops briefly, and I know Pops credits Gentry for a change in philosophy regarded bench depth, rotation, minutes management, and rest, plus floor spacing via 2010 playoffs vs Suns.

Stevens seems like a natural, but Kerr seems a good fit, as well. Donovan has years of U19 USA experience on the International scene.

But this makes a ton of sense. It's a well-deserved honor, and with the eventual successor on staff, gives that person experience without just being thrown into things.
I'm not sure the successor needs to be on staff. I'm betting Pop picks guys he wants, like Kerr and Mike Bud.

How about Brett Brown, or is he still committed to Australia?

Just over a year ago in Chicago, Gregg Popovich raised the question with commissioner Adam Silver at the annual NBA coaches meeting: How did the USA Basketball national coaching job turn into a lifetime appointment for a college coach?

I've been saying that for years. Coaching the USMNT is an honor more than an actual coaching position, Coach K hogging it up for a three-peat is narcissistic af when you have great coaches like Pop who still haven't had that honor.
