I'm not understanding the charges. Yes, it's very illegal to your high school student regardless of whether he/she is of legal age, but she's getting nailed for simply working at the high school they go to? Inappropriate yes, take away her teaching licence even... but up to 40 years imprisonment? That's insane. She won't get that, but the fact that it's even a possibility is crazy.

I mean, I don't think we should let teachers schtoop minors. Just because two people agree to break the rules together doesn't mean it should be legal. The equality needs to come from punishing the minors/students more for their roles in all this mess. You have consensual sex with a teacher, you go to jail just like they do. Obviously rape and coercion are different (for the teacher and the student), but in cases like this, no way should the teen tell his dad and then go free while the teacher has to beat a 40-year sentence.

Because this isn't the same thing as Davies and his GF boning each other against BYU's code of conduct. There are VERY good reasons why you don't want students and teachers to have sex. I don't see why that's ambiguous. And because you don't want that to happen, you need to punish people who do that. I honestly think it should be life-altering -- because losing your teaching license (if that's a thing) is life-altering, and the kids shouldn't get off. Maybe they get barred from higher education or can't get their diploma for 10 years so something.
But it's not okay. The fact that it's "victimless" has absolutely no effect on its severity.
I agree that it should be enforced. Teachers shouldn't be boning their students. My earlier post was questioning the cir stances more than anything. Seventeen is legal in Texas, take out the fact that she's a teacher and there's nothing wrong. Nowhere in the article does it say she was their teacher though, in fact the second dude was surprised to find out that she worked at his school. Sounds like she met both guys at non-school related functions. So what is she getting charged for?

There's too much room for interpretation if you allow for this situation to happen. The guy being "surprised to find out she worked at his school" is anecdotal even if true. And still, do they get a pass for NOT knowing. And if they did know her, it's a whole can of worms getting open. She wasn't their teacher, but maybe she could have been influential with one of their teachers. Or maybe the kid is slamming her so she'll pass one of his friends. What if she was going to become their teacher the next semester? You just don't want to deal with it.
