That was the worst basketball team ever assembled by the US, tbh. Even a prime MJ would have a hard time putting a team with Iverson and Marbury, two of the biggest cancers in basketball, on his back. Good thing the '08 reincarnation just one one prime cancer (Kobe) to deal with. Also, not sure how the '08 would be able to beat a prime '04 Argentina squad.

Notice how Kobe Bryant was coattailing the out of then 25-year old Wade and 23-year old James Kobe, the 30-year old, didn't even led the team in points Kobe was a glorified role player on this team. He played the role of Klay Thompson by thriving off Lebron and Wade's exploits, tbh. Lebron was the clear alpha of this squad and this just shows how a 23-year old Lebron (15.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.8 apg, 2.4 spg) is already two tiers better than a prime Kobe.

    My takeaways here would be:

    1. Kobe played a role player type of role in 2008 by feeding off double teams on Lebron and Wade. This isn't surprising because he's used to this type of role his entire career.
    2. Duncan had vastly superior numbers in 2004 despite playing in the worst assembled US team of all time. He just had the misfortune of playing against a prime Argentina team, which would give even the '92 US team fits.
    3. Lebron is really a transcendent talent as evidenced by the performance in 2008. 20 years from now, people will still talk about what a great two-way player he really is.

Look at the way it was constructed and you had Iverson and Marbury as PG's who had no outside shot basically. They lacked shooters and it was just a horribly constructed team IMO. When Kidd, Kobe and Shaq etc. dropped out you are looking at a huge loss and they would have won an easy gold IMO if everyone goes. That is the truth.

Lebron surely was not Lebron yet and Wade was not Wade yet as we know them, another factor.

Jim led the Kang to a Bronze Medal. Look at their NBA careers, surefire HOFer credentials, then note that they are Bronze Medalists. Something doesn't add up.

As a rule I don't partake in this subject of thread. If Kool wasn't a friend of the family I'd read him a riot act over it's lodgement, but, that being said,,,Lebron wasn't Lebron till you gave him your 1st 5th.

23-year old Lebron already was the alpha of the 08 USA team. Just shows you Kobe is nothing more than a glorified and less talented version of Scottie Pippen.

Enters thread with low expectations due to who the TC is.

Sees nearly every post is by a Lakers fan.

Gets bored of obvious circle jerk and looks at current NBA standings

Laughs when sees where the Spurs and Lakers are respectively.

Leaves and sleeps well tonight while looking forward to the rest of the season.
