...hat yet and, I'm certainly no conspiracist by nature but, Google Earth has given us an opportunity to view areas that, up 'til now (and who knows for how much longer), were inaccessible to all but the average mult-billion dollar satellite owner.

So, with that in mind; find 37 Deg. 15'00.00" N @ 115 Deg. 48'30.00" W on your handy-dandy Google Earth application. Then, follow both runways north into the dry lake bed and tell me what the heck that is.

Maybe I'm just uninitiated in the whole Area 51 phenomenon, but that's one strange runway extension. I'm at a loss to explain them but, I'm no aviation expert either.

Okay, if the chief nut in this forum (Nbadan) responds to this post, I'll un-ignore him just to see what is the scoop from Bananaland.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe those landing strips are for aircraft to land on...or hover on...or float on...or to be beamed up on.

So, the long, thin, curled extension (possibly a rail or track of some kind) accommodates regular aircraft?

    Zoom in Joe.

    Seriously, I'm curious.

Nevermind, Google (search engine) to the rescue:

Since the existing 5,000-foot runway was incapable of supporting the weight of the A-12, a new airstrip (runway 14/32) was constructed between 7 September and 15 November 1960. The A-12 required a runway at least 8,500 feet long. About 25,000 cubic yards of concrete were poured to make the airstrip. A 10,000-foot asphalt extension, for emergency use, cut diagonally across the southwest corner of the lakebed. An Archimedes curve approximately two miles across was marked on the dry lake so that an A-12 pilot approaching the end of the overrun could abort to the playa instead of plunging the aircraft into the sagebrush. Area 51 pilots called it "The Hook." For crosswind landings two unpaved airstrips (runways 9/27 and 03/21) were marked on the dry lakebed.
I've canceled my foil hat order.

It's cool if it works right. Check your specifications; it won't run on just any box.

Area 51 was a place where they did a LOT of testing of experimental aircraft, so it is logical that they might need longer runways.

Okay Mr. Intelligence Analyst, the length of the runways wasn't the point of discussion. Besides, we've already figured it out without you. But,thanks for playing. Now go back to your communications intercepts...
