Stupid thread as per the usual. No one cares about TD.
Tim was better than Shaq/Dork in '02/'06 & proved it by outplaying them H2H in the postseason.....his teammates let him down.
Dirk was never the best player on the planet. Let's be real. That's like saying Rose was the best in 2011.
The Correct List:
2000: Shaq
2001: Shaq
2002: Shaq
2003: Kobe
2004: Garnett
2005: Nash
2006: Kobe
2007: Nash/Dirk tie
2008: Kobe
2009: Kobe
2010: Kobe
2011: Dirk
2012: LeBron
2013: LeBron
2014: LeBron
2015: LeBron
2016: Curry/LeBron tie
2017: ???? Jury still out (Harden, LeBron, Westbrook all up there)
Flawless execution
Laker fans mad
2000-13 - Duncan
2013-now KD
Skip Bayless thinks It's still Michael Jordan.
That list is re ed.
Shaq was only better than TD in 2001, maybe 2000, but that's it. TD was the MVP in 2002, Shaq was never better than him from that point on.
I remember right after the Spurs won the le in 2003, Tim Legler was on ESPN saying Kobe is the best player in the league and not Tim. Mind you Spurs beat the Lakers in the playoffs that year.. Haters just hate..
You might be right, I just gave '02 to Shaq 'cause the Lakers won the trophy that year. Same with '07 and Duncan, many would argue that Lebron was already better than Tim by that year and they might be right. I just gave the benefit of the doubt to the champions.
Despite these minor differences I think we can all agree that "the best player in the World" le in these years went through the hands of these three guys, nobody else.
Then what would yours be? Honestly. I actually lived during those years and have vivid NBA memories from each one. My list is damn near perfect if not so.
Did you even watch the Lakers back then? From 2000-2002, Shaq was the closest thing the NBA ever has had to a deus-ex-machina, or a Mon-Star from Space Jam. His only weakness was, if you fouled him in time, he might miss a free throw or two, but you're getting in serious foul trouble that way. If you didn't foul him, it was an automatic dunk and often a third point from the foul line.
TD was the MVP in 2002 because of the rise of Kobe taking a lot of oomph away from the Shaq argument, even though Shaq was still more important than Kobe in 2002, it wasn't by as big of a margin as in 2000 or 2001. These were dark, dark days for the Spurs if you don't remember. Oh, the inevitability of our season ending in getting our ass whooped every year by the buzzsaw of Shaq, Kobe, Phil, the refs, and all of their annoying ass role players that always seemed to make every ing shot against us (George, Fisher, Horry, Shaw, Fox, etc).
TD deserved MVP in 2002 because he carried a team full of broken down old players we'd had for a long time, a sadly broken down D-Rob who was basically 2010/2011 McDyess at that point in his career, and a rookie TP who couldn't shoot and couldn't stop turning the ball over to save his life.
Our fortunes didn't finally change until the 2002-03 season when the Spurs revamped and revitalized the roster, and it was obvious by December-January that these weren't going to be the same championship Lakers. Shaq was oft injured, many of the role players became washed up and oft injured, they were giving starter minutes to guys like Jannero Pargo, Mark Madsen and Kareem Rush at the end of the bench, and the team overall just had an "I'm bored of fighting hard all year to win every year" aura about it. But not Kobe. Kobe was the best player in the NBA in 2003 and it was painfully obvious. Remember that insane, 20-something game long streak of 40+ point games that year around February-March that got the Lakers out of the dungeon of the West and up to 50 wins and the 5th seed? Yeah... that Kobe was pretty ing awesome to see, even if he was a ballhog and a .
I'm sorry but you've got to be drinking too much liquor if you honestly believe he was the best in either 2006 or 2007... even 2005 it's hard to make a case for it, even though Kobe was down and out and Lebron was too young. Duncan wasn't even the best player on his own team in 2007, and he certainly wasn't top 5 in the NBA then... how good is your memory? That year was dominated by Nash and Dirk, those two just tore up the league. Elsewhere you have Kobe and Lebron up there in the top 5, Parker was the best Spur (TD > Manu though, Manu was hurt a bit that year) and you have to put McGrady over Parker in a year like that.
And this ing guy calls hinself a Spurs fan?

4 down is so inefficient and why we struggled to score so much until Pop let Tony and Manu run the motion offense, drive and dish game more often.
Even in the playoffs, Duncan was awesome at times, taken out of the game others.

One of the most re ed posts I have ever seen.
Adam Morrison led the Lakers to B2B les tbh
Tim averaged 29/17/5/3 (Game-score: 23) while Snack averaged 21/12/3/3 (Game-score: 16) & only shot 44% while living in the paint. Spurs were leading in the 4th quarter of every game in the 2002 series & lost b/c Kirby was the Lakers closer while Antonio Daniels was Tim's wing-man.
LeBron in the 2007 Finals averaged 22/7/7 on a horrific 35% shooting & had a game-score of 10 (Net rating: -19) while Tim averaged 18/12/4 w/ a game-score of 15. LeBron took advantage of an aging Pistons squad that no longer hand Ben Wallace in the middle while Tim annihilated the Suns who were favored to win it all after the Mavs choked in the 1st rd. People also forget that Antwan Jamison gave LeBron the business in the 1st rd & the Wizard might have beaten the Cavs if Arenas didn't get injured.
