    The gray revolt against Trump

President Trump is losing his fellow baby boomers. Their turnabout is the central reason he trails Joe Biden by a substantial — and apparently growing — margin.

Four years ago, Trump handily won his own generation, which is generally defined as being born between 1946 and 1964, while losing every younger generation. The Pew Research Center estimates that Trump beat Hillary Clinton by nine percentage points among voters 65 and older.

The latest polls this year show a radically different situation. A CNN poll released yesterday found

    Biden leading Trump by
21 points — 60 percent to 39 percent — among likely voters 65 and older.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday found

    an even bigger gap:
    27 points.

Dave Wasserman of The Cook Political Report calls it
    “the ‘gray revolt’ against Trump.”

    Why is it happening?

Older Americans began to drift away from Trump even before the coronavirus.

    Some don’t like his
“chaotic and unconventional presidency,” as Ella Nilsen of Vox points out.

    Others may be
more open to supporting Biden than Clinton — given his gender and what polls show to be his lower negativity ratings and less liberal image.

Baby boomers also have experience living in a less polarized country, when
    vote switching was more common.

But the virus seems to be a factor, too.

Many older Americans understand that other countries have handled the virus better than the U.S. They are tired of the restrictions of pandemic life. And

many boomers are afraid — for good reason, given that about
150,000 of the 210,000 confirmed U.S. virus deaths have occurred among people 65 or older.

There are only two age groups that continue to support Trump, according to Times polls conducted over the past month.

The first is a narrow slice of people older than baby boomers, typically in their late 70s, who have long been conservative.

The second is a group of middle-aged people who include the youngest boomers and the oldest members of Generation X:

    By The New York Times

The middle-aged group is less vulnerable to the disease than people over 65 (although they’re still vulnerable).

The group is also more conservative than people under 40. Its members came of age during Jimmy Carter’s unsuccessful presidency, Ronald Reagan’s two terms in office and the U.S. triumph in the Cold War.

But winning only a couple of slices of the country’s age spectrum isn’t enough to win a presidential election. The CNN and NBC polls both showed Trump trailing by double digits nationwide.

New polls yesterday showed him losing in
    Arizona,
    Florida,
    Michigan,
    North Carolina,
    Pennsylvania and
    Wisconsin.

Trump keeps telling people that the virus is not as bad as they’ve heard.

    Older Americans aren’t buying it.

GOP donors are giving up on Trump to keep Mitch McConnell in power

Republicans seem resigned to a loss for President Donald Trump and are focusing their resources on holding onto their Senate majority.

Top GOP donors have been shifting their focus to Senate races for weeks as the president continues to sink in the polls and the party’s down-ballot candidates have been substantially out-raised

“There is no discussion among donors about giving money to the president,”

the benefits of divided government to hobble Joe Biden in the event he wins.

McConnell (R-KY) has been warning that

Democrats would expand the Supreme Court,

grant statehood to Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia and

end the filibuster if they took away his power.

“He’s already moving into those talking points,” said one GOP operative, “and that is by design.”

Aides fear Trump is melting down because of the ‘ tail of drugs’ he’s taking for COVID

been behaving even more erratically than usual,

as exemplified by his decision to
call off economic relief talks only to insist that Democrats pass economic relief bills hours later.

dexamethasone, a steroid that can cause mood swings and can give a false level of energy and a sense of euphoria.”

    at Walter Reed Memorial Hospital,
the president was given an unprecedented combination of drugs that included

    dexamethasone,

    remdesivir, and

    monoclonal antibodies.

This was eventually going to happen, which is why Biden needs to start making appearances and helping in key senate races. If he wins but doesn't have a senate majority, he's a lame duck before he even sets foot in the white house. Start carpet bombing North Carolina, Iowa, Montana, South Carolina and Georgia with negative ads about Trump and the in bent.

This has been the probelm for him for months and he's done nothing to ease senior's concerns. Despite his fake news claims, he knows it's legit because his own internal polling show him struggling with the one demographic you don't want to lose because they always vote.

It looks as though he is intentionally trying to get blown out.

The nation's elders are abandoning Donald Trump in droves

What is even more significant than the topline number, however, is that

Trump’s biggest decline came from seniors,

where Biden leads by 27 points (62-35).

    While that is dramatic, other
national and state polls have shown Biden with a sizable lead among seniors.

That is a huge reversal from 2016 when Trump won with voters who were over 65 by seven points.

Record early voting suggests turnout could reach 65 percent

More than 4 million Americans have voted already,

more than 50 times more than the number that had cast ballots at this point in the 2016 election,

turnout could reach 65 percent of eligible voters, the highest rate since 1908.

I think it's too late for him to make much ground with seniors now.

But if he is tyring to lose, maybe he just wants to go back to living his lavish lifestyle without the media scrutiny, but he doesn't want to let the hardcore Maga guys down as he knows how passionate they are.

His political instincts were on point in 2016 and it's been the exact opposite this time around. It's baffling, tbh. And his recent tweet storms seem to indicate he is either high as a kite or maybe he is unraveling and going insane.

It wasn't his political instincts in 2016, it was Steve Bannon . Bannon was the one who knew to target the rust belt. Without his 2016 campaign team, he's a rudderless ship.

Cocaine Mitch is clearly ready to ditch Trump. He's funneling all the GOP donor money to senate races while Trump's campaign is going broke. What I don't think Mitch accounted for is that Trump isn't willing to fall gracefully the way GWB did. Trump's view is if I lose I don't give two s about how many GOP senators fall with me.

I disagree with the NYT that this is going to SCOTUS again. It’s no longer a precedent-setting cons utional law issue, it’s a vanilla issue regarding the broadness of a subpoena. SCOTUS has better to do.
