    The President’s Cognitive Decline

As age factors more urgently in politics, a simple test could evaluate who remains fit for office.

the office requires a person “to be very flexible with [one’s] mind,” and that by age 80 he wouldn’t have felt able to do the job.

“You have to be able to go from one subject to another and concentrate on each one adequately and then put them together in a comprehensive way,” Carter said.

    Many neurologists and psychiatrists have
raised urgent concerns about Donald Trump’s inability to hold a basic train of thought.

Compared with his public appearances in decades prior,

his meandering speech suggests declines in ability to reason and form basic arguments.

A decade ago, he was capable of uttering sentences as cogent as Carter’s.

The most relevant abilities are demonstrated through those language tests:

namely, the cognitive-processing abilities that show that a person can synthesize complex ideas and identify key points.

“Language is cognition in action,” Bayles says.

Simple tests can be remarkably telling.

If you had only one test to assess cognitive decline, she says, it would be this.

First you tell somebody a simple story. (In her example, a lady went to the grocery store and lost her wallet, but then someone found it and she got it back.)

Then you ask simple questions about what the person just heard.

You ask the same questions just after the story, and then again 30 minutes later.

Most young people with “normal” cognition get about 15 out of 17 questions right both times.

Older people with normal cognition get one or two fewer in the second round.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta questions Trump’s ‘routine checkup’:

‘Those things are done at the White House medical unit’

“A presidential visit to a hospital is a big thing and it sounds like the staff didn’t necessarily know,” Gupta said.

“They typically all know because it’s a pretty big event.”

“They say a quick exam and labs, that’s what they say he had done,” he continued.

“Those things are often done at the White House medical unit…

They can do quite a bit there, including things like this.

So what was it, I guess is the question, that he needed to go to the hospital for specifically? We don’t know.”

Gupta took issue with Grisham’s statement to the press.

“I think any medical professional knows

when there is a patient going to the hospital in a surprise way like this, that would be the question,” Gupta said.

There Will Be No Victory in Dishonor

President Trump’s pardons for three service members accused of war crimes will have lasting consequences.

None of the services seems happy

with President Donald Trump’s decision to pardon two service members accused of war crimes, and reverse the demotion of a third.

The Navy’s reply, however, sets some kind of record of disdain.

The Twitter account of the U.S. Navy’s Chief of Information Office
    wrote on November 15:

“As the Commander in Chief, the President has the authority

to restore Special Warfare Operator First Class Gallagher to the pay grade of E-7. We acknowledge his order and are implementing it.”

Those icy words breathe the mood of the admonition from Band of Brothers:

“We salute the rank, not the man.”

The American officer who told me the story would later lead part of the cleanup effort at Abu Ghraib, after the exposure of maltreatment of prisoners there.

He told his troops in Iraq:

The way the U.S. Army had treated German POWs in 1943 paid security dividends for 40 years afterward.

The way the Army treats its prisoners today will matter just as much 40 years from now.

    Every war ends.

The memories from that war persist for decades.

War is horrible enough when fought honorably.

To join dishonor to horror is no victory for any American cause.

    Unraveling of Donald Trump

As the impeachment inquiry intensifies, some associates of the president predict that his already erratic behavior is going to get worse.

    Angered by the proceedings,

unen bered by aides willing to question his judgment, and

more and more isolated in the West Wing,

Trump is apt to lash out more at enemies imagined and real,

“He’s grown more comfortable in the job and

less willing to assimilate new information and trust new advisers,”

“He’s decided to throw caution to the wind and go it alone,

especially when he’s stressed and feels under attack and threatened in various ways.

Then his worst impulses and vices shine through.”

    Of course, Trash is LYING

    ‘Something nefarious going on’:

Obama deputy chief of staff doesn’t buy White House claims on Trump’s health

Messina found two fatal flaws in the White House argument.

“If it was a routine planned thing, you never would do it at Walter Reed

    — you would have done all that stuff at the White House facilities, which are state of the art and amazing,” he explained.

“If it was just routine stuff, you never would have taken him out.”

“And if you were going to take him

for a routine visit to Walter Reed,

    you would have announced it,

you would have had a photo op with the troops,

you would have done a bunch of things that are regular to do,” he continued.

Trump is sabotaging the presidency from within —

exactly what Alexander Hamilton ‘darkly envisioned’

President Donald Trump is best understood as an “anti-president” who corrupts all his office stands for,

“We have learned that Trump is so obsessed with the legitimacy of his 2016 election —

and so terrified of becoming a private citizen (subject to indictment and imprisonment) after the 2020 election —

that he embraces a conspiratorial myth of Ukrainian responsibility for Russian lawlessness hatched by an oligarch in Vladimir Putin’s orbit,” wrote Tribe.

“We have heard an official’s first-hand account of a president so beholden to Putin that he blithely dismisses Russia’s aggression as not ‘big stuff’

compared with a public announcement by Ukraine’s new president to the effect that, contrary to fact, its government is investigating (nonexistent) corruption by Trump’s political rival.”

“There will be time, to determine how best to wrap

    the indisputable abuses of power,

    betrayals of the nation and

    corruption of the presidential office

into appropriately labeled articles of impeachment,”

“More than unpresidential, Trump represents the perfect exemplar of what Alexander Hamilton darkly envisioned when he described the danger that a demagogue might one day assume the presidency and require removal through the awesome power of impeachment,” wrote Tribe.

“Such a demagogue, Hamilton prophesied, would be

‘a man unprincipled in private life[,]

    desperate in his fortune,

    bold in his temper…

    despotic in his ordinary demeanour.’

Such a man, Hamilton wrote, would one day

‘mount the hobby horse of popularity —

to join in the cry of danger to liberty —

to take every opportunity of embarrassing the General Government &

bringing it under su ion —

to flatter and fall in with all the non sense of the zealots of the day’

with the object of ‘throw[ing] things into confusion that he may ‘ride the storm and direct the whirlwind.”

Such a man, we should all be able to see now, is Donald J. Trump.”

Are We Pretending Donald Trump Wasn’t Secretly Rushed to the Hospital?

    Pick one:

Donald Trump was rushed to the hospital to visit a sick child because he is such a caring person...

    Or

Donald Trump is the only president in history to break their physical examinations into two parts…

    Or

Donald Trump and the White House staff is lying.

a presidential motorcade took Trump to Walter Reed National Military Hospital for an unannounced “screening,” according to
    NBC.

    Unlike his two previous exams,

this “surprise” exam wasn’t on his public schedule and

no one—even the staff at the hospital—seemed to know about it.

Accompanied by the presidential physician and

a weird yellow envelope attached to his curiously bulging coat,

    the colostomy bag of presidents

insisted that he was visiting a sick child

    and

    undertaking an unprecedented two-part exam.

White House press secretary claims Obama aides left mean notes in White House—then backtracks

Baseless accusations are the name of the game when it comes to the Trump administration and today, apparently, is no different.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham jumped into the mix this morning with an accusation that is pretty difficult, if not outright impossible, to ever verify.

“We came into the White House, I’ll tell you something,” Grisham reportedly said during a radio interview, as first
tweeted by Abby Phillip of CNN.

“Every office was filled with Obama books and we had notes left behind that said, ‘You will fail,’ ‘You aren’t going to make it.’”

Here she is, walking back her story.

The note on not knowing why everyone is “so sensitive” is a very Trumpian approach to pretending not to know why people hold you accountable for baseless claims, conceivably meant to stir the pot and distract the general public.

Grisham response to former Obama staffers pushing back on her comments that nasty notes were left behind during the transition:

“I was talking specifically (and honestly) about our experience in the lower press office – nowhere else.”
