Typically whenever someone is accused, there should be proof of the accusation, no?

The standards for proof in journalism are not the same as a court of law, nor should they be. Anonymous sources have been fundamental to reporting for decades. Sources often provide important information on the condition of anonymity. Watergate would be nothing if not for Deep Throat.

The onus is on the journalist and publisher to validate, because if those sources are illegitimate, it damages the reputation of the publisher and the journalist and may prevent them from breaking other stories.

At least, that's how it worked before punditry overcame fact and people decided they didn't care about getting the real story. Now truth doesn't matter, only validation, and people like you would prefer a world where people who act as whistleblowers against the most powerful people in the country be exposed.
