i mean the numbers are there for everybody to see. we see murder rates in other western countries (lol holding our standard to "being better than el salvador and honduras). we see that we are an outlier.
it just comes down to "yer not taken muh guns"
Love discussing hypotheticals about preventing gun massacres when we have actual examples of effective policy ins uted in other developed countries.

a handgun ban would not pass, thanks to er and McDonald, so that's a moot point unless public opinion becomes so one sided that SCOTUS will bend. don't see that happening tbh. besides, i dont think i would support a universal gun ban even if there was no 2nd amendment
best we could do is ramp regulations, rather than outright bans.
i think the big issue is the sheer availability of guns in the US. we have more per capita than anywhere. nobody even comes close. i would like the idea of having a voluntary gun buyback program, sorta like cash for clunkers. and have the govt destroy those weapons (or sell them to ISIS. jk). find a way to slow production. expanded background checks, mandatory training, and regular mental health evaluations. limit how many rounds a non-vendor can own, etc.
